Channa Stewartii Snakehead Care Guide: Assam Variant

Among the dwarf channas, Channa stewartii has a quiet reputation as the gentlest of the bunch — a fish that lets new wild-fish keepers learn the ropes without the high-strung aggression of its cousins. Channa stewartii from the Assam tea-country streams of north-eastern India brings beautiful chocolate-and-orange colouration in a 15-18cm package, with a calmer disposition that makes pair bonding more reliable. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers care, sourcing and the husbandry quirks that distinguish stewartii from the rest of the dwarf channa group.

Origin and Habitat

Native to the Brahmaputra river basin in Assam and adjacent areas of north-eastern India and Bhutan. Wild populations live in slow forest streams and floodplain pools at low elevation, often shaded by tea plantations. The species sees a clear cool-season cycle in the wild but adapts well to steady captive temperatures.

Identification

Adults reach 15-18cm with a stocky chocolate-brown body marked by broken vertical bars. Unpaired fins carry orange margins that intensify during pair bonding. The pectoral fins show concentric ring patterns — a useful field mark distinguishing stewartii from C. bleheri and C. andrao. Mature males display slightly more vivid colour and a more domed head.

Tank Size

A bonded pair lives comfortably in 120 litres with footprint of at least 90x45cm. Single specimens manage in 80 litres. Build the layout with dense driftwood, Anubias, and leaf litter cover. Use the aquarium tank range for braced setups; the lid must be heavy, gap-free and weighted to prevent jumping accidents.

Water Parameters

Soft, slightly acidic water suits best. Target pH 5.8-7.2, GH 2-8, KH 0-4, temperature 22-26°C. The cool end is preferred. Singapore PUB tap (GH 2-4, KH 1-2) works well after chloramine neutralisation and tannin staining with ANS Catappa Leaves Small. Stable parameters trump perfect numbers — channas tolerate gradual change but crash with sudden swings.

Filtration

Carnivorous waste loading demands strong biological filtration. A canister at moderate flow with baffled outflow suits best. Stock from the filter media range with mature biological media. Channas hate current — keep flow gentle and avoid spray bars or powerheads.

Diet

Strictly carnivorous. Frozen mysis, bloodworm, krill, prawn and squid form the staple, supplemented with live earthworms and river shrimp as variety. Avoid feeder goldfish. Stewartii are slightly more willing than other channas to take pellet food after several weeks of conditioning, but live and frozen always provide the best colour. Feed adults twice weekly only.

Calmer Disposition

Among the most consistent pair-bonders in the dwarf channa group. Reliable bonding from juvenile pairings, lower aggression toward each other, and easier acclimation to keeper presence. New stewartii owners often comment that the fish recognise them and emerge from hides at feeding time after a few weeks. This makes stewartii the recommended starter dwarf channa for hobbyists transitioning from community fish.

Pair Bonding and Breeding

Paternal mouthbrooder. The male holds eggs and fry in his throat for 14-21 days. Captive breeding is achievable in well-maintained pair tanks with stable cool blackwater conditions and conditioning on live food. Fry are 8-10mm at release and accept baby brine shrimp immediately. Local breeders have produced multiple generations from imported wild stock.

Singapore Sourcing

Available periodically through Indian importers via Polyart, Iwarna and the Carousell wild-fish keeper community. Wild-imported juveniles run SGD 60-120; coloured adults SGD 120-220; bonded pairs SGD 250-450. Less expensive than premium pulchra but firmly above bleheri pricing. Quarantine new stock 30 days with prophylactic praziquantel before adding to a display.
