Channa Gachua Snakehead Care Guide: Singapore Native Snakehead

Channa Gachua Snakehead Care Guide

Sungei Buloh’s tidal channels and the slow forest streams of Pulau Ubin still carry small populations of Channa gachua — Singapore’s most widespread true native snakehead, a fish whose ancestors have lived here long before any aquarium shop existed. Channa gachua singapore stock you see in the trade comes exclusively from licensed Indian and Sri Lankan farms; collection from local waters is illegal under the Wildlife Act 2020. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers care, the conservation context, and why this species deserves a place in any serious channa keeper’s tank rotation.

Singapore Native Status

One of two true Singapore-native channas (the other being Channa orientalis). Wild populations persist in protected reserves, where they are entirely off limits to collection. The aquarium trade brings in stock from Indian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan licensed farms — the species has an enormous natural range across South and South-East Asia. Always buy farmed stock and never release captive fish into local waterways.

Identification and Size

Reaches around 20cm adult length, slightly larger than C. orientalis. The body is olive-brown with broken vertical bars and a creamy belly. Unpaired fins carry orange-yellow margins. Crucially, C. gachua retains pelvic fins — the surest field mark distinguishing it from C. orientalis which lacks them entirely. Mature males show slightly brighter fin margins.

Tank Size

A single specimen needs 100 litres minimum with footprint of at least 80x40cm. Pair tanks (rare in this species — most are kept solo) need 200 litres. Build with dense driftwood, Anubias, and leaf litter cover from the decoration and substrate range. The lid must be heavy, gap-free and weighted; gachua are notorious jumpers.

Water Parameters

Blackwater specialist. Target pH 5.5-6.8, GH 2-6, KH 0-3, temperature 23-27°C. Singapore PUB tap is naturally soft and works well after chloramine neutralisation and tannin staining with ANS Catappa Leaves Small. The species tolerates a wider temperature range than hill-stream channas like pulchra, but consistent cool-end temperature extends lifespan.

Filtration

Carnivorous waste loading demands strong biological filtration. A canister at moderate flow with baffled outflow suits best. Stock from the filter media range with mature biological media. Channas hate current — keep flow gentle and avoid spray bars.

Diet

Strictly carnivorous. Frozen mysis, bloodworm, krill, prawn and squid form the staple. Live earthworms and river shrimp are excellent variety. Avoid feeder goldfish — they introduce parasites and cause fatty liver disease. Feed adults twice weekly only. Visible belly distension after feeding signals overfeeding; channa obesity is the leading cause of premature death in captivity.

Solo Or Pair

Mouthbrooding species, typically kept solo. Pair tanks are achievable with juveniles raised together but the bond is less reliable than in C. bleheri or C. andrao. Most Singapore keepers maintain gachua as single specimens for the personality and colour rather than attempting reproduction. Never combine gachua with other dwarf channas — they are intolerant of conspecific intrusion.

Behaviour

Gachua are alert, intelligent fish that learn keeper routines and recognise individuals. Provide multiple cave hides among driftwood and rockwork. Activity peaks at dawn and dusk; bright open setups with no cover stress them and dull the colour. A dim, tannin-stained setup with floating plant cover overhead matches their natural blackwater habitat.

Singapore Sourcing and Legality

Available periodically at Polyart, Iwarna and through the Carousell wild-fish keeper community. Wild-imported juveniles from India run SGD 30-70; coloured adults SGD 70-150; locality-form premium specimens SGD 200+. AVS does not restrict gachua as pets, but releasing into local waterways is a criminal offence under the Wildlife Act with severe penalties. Treat every purchase as a long-term commitment — these fish live 8-12 years properly cared for.
