African cichlids from the rift lakes are heavily kept in Singapore, and the mbuna group in particular are grazers that graze algae and plant matter in the wild. A vegetable-forward floating pellet like Cichlid Excel matches that gut design, which is why we recommend it over high-protein staples for yellow labs, demasoni, acei and similar Malawi fish. Feeding the right plant-based diet helps keep their long digestive tracts working and reduces the bloating problems hobbyists run into.

In our warm 27-29C tanks these fish are active and beg constantly, so discipline matters. Feed only what the group clears in a couple of minutes, two to three times daily, and skip a day now and then. Hard, alkaline rift-lake water is the other half of the equation; our chloraminated tap is soft and slightly acidic, so most keepers buffer their cichlid tanks with mineral salts or aragonite substrate.
