Danio Glofish is a genetically modified zebra danio that comes in several different fluorescent neon colors such as red, green, orange, blue and purple. They were genetically modified with the purpose to detect environmental pollution. Scientists were able to inject a fluorescent protein gene (from marine organisms) into the zebra danio embryos to create glofish. Successive offspring gets the gene passed down to them from parents. There may be some in fighting among themselves but keeping them in a school of 6 or more should help limit their fin nipping tendencies. They also look very cool when kept in large schools.

How To Safely Add Fish To Tank

  1. Set live stock aside with transportation bag in room temperature place for 30 minutes.

  3. Use a fish net to transfer the live stock by scooping it from the bag into the tank.

Note: Do not release live stocks together with the transportation water into tank.

Keeping Colored Zebra Danio (GloFish) in Singapore

Colored zebra danios, including the fluorescent GloFish strains, are selectively bred and genetically modified colour forms of the hardy classic zebra danio. They keep the same easygoing, active temperament: fast, tireless swimmers that are forgiving of beginner mistakes and a joy in a planted display. Like all danios they are shoaling fish and must be kept in a group of at least six, otherwise they turn nippy and skittish. A longer tank suits their constant darting better than a tall nano.

For Singapore keepers, danios are about as easy as freshwater fish get. They thrive in our warm 27-29C ambient water without a heater, tolerate the soft, slightly acidic profile of dechlorinated local tap water well, and handle a range of conditions once the tank is cycled. Give them open swimming space at the front, a secure lid since they are jumpers, and a varied diet of small flakes and frozen foods for the best colour and condition.
