Electric Blue Ram Care Guide: Stunning but Sensitive

This electric blue ram care guide walks you through the essentials of keeping one of the most visually striking dwarf cichlids in the freshwater hobby. The electric blue ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a selectively bred colour morph of the German blue ram, prized for its iridescent sky-blue body that seems to glow under aquarium lighting. At Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, we see tremendous demand for this fish, but we always caution that its beauty comes with higher care requirements than many beginners expect.

Species Background

The wild-type German blue ram hails from the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia, where it inhabits warm, soft, acidic waters. The electric blue morph was developed through selective breeding, primarily in Asian fish farms. While it retains the compact body shape and peaceful temperament of its wild ancestor, the intensive breeding has made it somewhat more delicate. Adults reach approximately 5 to 7 centimetres, making them well suited to smaller planted aquariums.

Tank Requirements

A pair of electric blue rams can be comfortably housed in a tank as small as 60 litres, though 80 litres or more is preferable if you plan to keep them in a community. Provide a soft, sandy substrate that allows them to sift through the bottom in search of food, which is a natural behaviour. Dense planting with species such as Cryptocoryne, Java Moss and Rotala provides essential cover and helps maintain stable water conditions. Include a few flat stones or small terracotta pots as potential spawning sites.

Water Parameters for Singapore

Electric blue rams are warm-water fish that thrive at 27 to 30 degrees Celsius, which aligns well with Singapore’s tropical climate. They prefer soft, acidic water with a pH of 5.5 to 6.8 and a GH below 8 dGH. Singapore’s tap water may need adjustment, particularly in terms of pH. Adding Indian almond leaves, driftwood or peat filtration can help lower the pH naturally. Pristine water quality is non-negotiable for this species. Perform 20 to 25 per cent water changes twice weekly and ensure ammonia and nitrite remain at zero.

Diet and Feeding

Electric blue rams are micro-predators that feed on small invertebrates in the wild. Offer a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, daphnia and baby brine shrimp. They can be initially reluctant to accept dry foods, so frozen offerings often help during the settling-in period. Feed small amounts two to three times daily rather than one large meal. A well-fed ram displays more vibrant colouration and greater confidence in the tank.

Temperament and Tankmates

These dwarf cichlids are peaceful and somewhat shy, making them ideal for well-planned community tanks. Suitable companions include cardinal tetras, rummy-nose tetras, corydoras catfish, otocinclus and small rasboras. Avoid aggressive or overly boisterous species that may outcompete them for food or cause stress. Keeping a pair rather than a single specimen often brings out their best behaviour, as they interact naturally and display brighter colours when comfortable.

Health Concerns

The electric blue ram’s main vulnerability is its sensitivity to poor water quality. Elevated nitrates, inconsistent temperatures or sudden parameter swings can quickly lead to illness. Common problems include ich, bacterial infections and internal parasites. Many commercially bred specimens arrive already weakened, so purchase only from reputable sources and quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks. Maintaining stable, warm, soft and clean water is the single most effective preventive measure.

Breeding Electric Blue Rams

Breeding is possible in a well-maintained aquarium with stable conditions. Pairs clean a flat surface before the female deposits up to 200 small eggs. Both parents typically guard the clutch, though first-time pairs may eat the eggs. Eggs hatch in two to three days at 28 degrees Celsius, and the fry become free-swimming within five days. Infusoria or liquid fry food is necessary for the first few days before graduating to freshly hatched baby brine shrimp.

Is the Electric Blue Ram Right for You?

If you are willing to invest in stable water conditions and a carefully curated community, the electric blue ram rewards you with a level of beauty that few freshwater fish can match. Its compact size makes it perfect for aquascaped nano tanks, while its peaceful nature suits a gentle community.
