Description

A currently rather rare plant is Bucephalandra sp. ‘Red Scorpio’. The name refers to the red coloration of the rhizome. With good lighting and adequate nutrients, the coloration is more distinct. Other characteristics include beautiful wavy leaf edges and dark olive green leaf coloration. The top of the leaf is also covered with tiny silvery dots, which further enhances the appearance. Like all Bucephalandra species, ‘Red Scorpio’ grows ideally on wood and stones. For aquascaping this beauty from Borneo is highly recommended, especially with delicate root compositions.

Bucephalandra sp. ‘Red Scorpio’ from Borneo

‘Red Scorpio’ is a rarer Bucephalandra named for the reddish rhizome it develops, set off by dark olive-green leaves with attractively wavy edges and tiny silvery dots scattered across the leaf surface. It is a genuine collector’s piece. Supplied potted for easy handling, it rewards close viewing, which makes it a natural fit for detailed aquascapes built around fine driftwood compositions where its colour can be admired up close.

To bring out the strongest red on the rhizome you will want good lighting and adequate nutrients; under dimmer conditions the colour stays more muted. As with every Buce, lift it from the pot and mount the rhizome on wood or stone rather than burying it. It grows slowly and steadily, accepts our soft local tap water, and tolerates warm 27-29C tanks, so no chiller is needed for this Borneo beauty.
