Hygrophila pinnatifida originates from India. It obtains brown, patched leaves on the surface with a distinctive burgundy colour underneath.
It creates horizontal side shoots and the top shoots should be pinched out in order to maintain compact and attractive growth.
The horizontal side shoots easily attach to both wood and rocks.
Growth is moderate, stems 15-40 cm tall and 10-20 cm wide, and the colour is attractive when planted in small groups with a plain background.
Intense lighting ensures compact growth due to the plant’s slow to medium growth rate.

Hygrophila pinnatifida (1-2-Grow!) for Singapore aquascapes

This is one of our favourite epiphytic stem plants because of its fern-like, burgundy-backed leaves and its willingness to attach to wood and rock. The 1-2-Grow! cup delivers it as pest-free tissue culture, so you avoid importing snails or algae into your scape. We split the cup into small portions and either tie the horizontal shoots onto hardscape or let them root into the substrate; both work, and attached growth gives that prized aged-jungle look.

To keep it compact and coloured, give it firm light; in lower light it stretches and stays greener. In our warm 27-29C tanks it grows at a moderate, manageable pace, and pinching out the top shoots encourages those side runners that spread across driftwood. Good flow over the leaves helps prevent the spot algae that warm bright tanks invite onto slower epiphytes.
