Tradescantia Zebrina (Wandering Jew) for Ripariums and Paludariums

Tradescantia zebrina, the striped wandering jew, is a vigorous trailing plant we love for riparium and paludarium edges where its purple-silver leaves spill over the waterline. It is grown emersed rather than fully submerged, so the roots can sit in or near water while the foliage reaches into the humid air above. In Singapore’s naturally humid rooms it establishes readily, trailing down hardscape and softening the hard line between water and land.

We recommend it for open-top builds and paludariums rather than sealed tanks, since it wants its leaves in air with low to moderate light. Trim it regularly because it grows fast, and use the cuttings to fill in gaps or start new pots. Keep its foliage out of any strong direct sun through a window, and rinse new plants before adding them to clear any hitchhikers or residues.
