Description

Aquarium plant from tissue culture in closed cup.
The Asian Monosolenium tenerum is an attractive liverwort, 2-5 cm high, which looks most like a giant Riccia that simply stays at the bottom, where it forms cushions.
It is a brittle plant, and pieces break off easily, so it is best to place it in the aquarium attached to stones with fishing line or in small clumps among other plants such as Eleocharis.
Once Monosolenium has established itself, it is very undemanding. This plant is mistakenly known as Pellia.

Monosolenium tenerum (Pellia) in Singapore Aquascapes

Monosolenium tenerum, still widely sold under its old name Pellia, is an Asian liverwort that forms dense, glossy green cushions low in the tank. We supply it in tissue culture cups, which means it arrives clean and free of algae or pests, a real advantage for shrimp keepers and nano scapers here. Because it carries no roots, it simply sits where you place it, building up into thick, textured mounds over time.

The plant is brittle and pieces snap off easily, so the trick is anchoring it. We tie clumps to stones with thread or fishing line, or tuck them between hardscape and slower plants until they settle. Once established it is remarkably undemanding, coping with our warm 27-29C water and moderate light. Gentle flow keeps debris from collecting in the cushions, which otherwise trap detritus in still corners.

Find more attached and carpet options in our epiphytes category for hardscape pairings. Our Pellia liverwort care guide covers ongoing maintenance, and our notes on attaching moss and liverworts to driftwood will help you secure these brittle clumps neatly in place.
