Description
Taxiphyllum Barbieri On Lava Stone
Taxiphyllum barbieri from South-East Asia is a hardy plant which makes few demands on the water or light.
The moss becomes 3-10 cm thick and grows willingly on any surface, so it is ideal for decorating stones and tree roots or concealing installations in the aquarium.
Attach the plant with a piece of fishing line or cotton thread until it has gained a hold on the décor.
If its growth becomes too luxuriant, it can be pruned with scissors.
In breeding aquariums Taxiphyllum barbieri offers a wonderful hiding place for the young fish.

Growing Taxiphyllum barbieri (Java moss) on lava stone in Singapore
This pre-grown lava stone takes all the fiddly tying-down work out of establishing moss, which is exactly what we recommend for beginners here. Java moss is one of the most forgiving plants for our conditions, thriving in the soft, lightly acidic water that comes out of most SG taps and tolerating the low-tech, no-CO2 setups that suit busy HDB hobbyists. Just rinse the stone, drop it onto your substrate or wedge it into hardscape, and let the rhizoids do the anchoring.
One local watch-point is temperature: at ambient 27-29C the moss grows faster but can also trap more detritus, so gentle flow and the occasional turkey-baster blast keep it clean and green rather than brown and matted. It makes an instant shaded refuge for shrimp and fry, and the stone gives you a movable green accent you can reposition as your scape evolves without disturbing roots.
