Description

Taxiphyllum barbieri
Taxiphyllum barbieri from South-East Asia is a hardy plant which makes few demands on the water or light.
The moss becomes 3-10 cm thick and grows willingly on any surface, so it is ideal for decorating stones and tree roots or concealing installations in the aquarium.
Attach the plant with a piece of fishing line or cotton thread until it has gained a hold on the décor.
If its growth becomes too luxuriant, it can be pruned with scissors. In breeding aquariums Taxiphyllum barbieri is a wonderful hiding place for the young fish.

Tropica Taxiphyllum Barbieri (Java Moss) in Singapore

Tropica’s Taxiphyllum barbieri, long sold as Java moss, is about the most forgiving plant we carry and a brilliant starting point for any Singapore aquascaper. It clings to stones, driftwood and mesh, hides equipment, and gives shrimp and fry endless grazing surface. It asks little of light or fertiliser, which makes it ideal for low-tech HDB and condo tanks running without CO2 or pressurised gear.

Tie or glue a thin layer onto your hardscape rather than burying it, and trim it back whenever it grows shaggy to keep the shape sharp. In our warm 27-29C water moss grows steadily but can trap detritus, so good flow and the odd turkey-baster blast keep it clean. A cooler, well-circulated tank tends to give the neatest, densest growth, and it pairs naturally with Anubias and other epiphytes on the same piece of wood.
