ANS Black Biological Sponge for Filtration in SG Tanks

This black filtration sponge does double duty, catching suspended particles mechanically while its porous body grows a dense bacterial colony for biological processing. Available in various sizes, it cuts cleanly to fit hang-on chambers, canister baskets, sump trays and pond boxes, making it one of the most flexible media to stock for mixed setups. The pH-neutral foam suits soft local water and a broad range of livestock, from goldfish and tetras to koi, parrot cichlids and shrimp.

In our 27-29C climate the colonies stay active year-round, so a matured sponge quietly handles ammonia and nitrite between water changes. Because it traps debris, we rinse the sponge regularly, but only in a bucket of dechlorinated or old tank water, never under the chloraminated tap, so the beneficial bacteria survive the clean. Stagger maintenance with other media so you never strip your whole biofilter at once.
