ANS Microfibre Filter Wool for Polishing Water

Filter wool is the first line of mechanical filtration, trapping the fine suspended particles that make water look hazy rather than crisp. At a thick 3cm this microfibre catches even the finest dirt while holding its shape longer than thin batting that flattens and channels after a week. We layer it ahead of biomedia in canisters and sumps so debris is caught before it can clog the porous surfaces where beneficial bacteria live.

It is washable and reusable for a few cycles, but we treat it as a polishing layer to swap out regularly rather than a permanent fixture, since trapped gunk breaks down and adds to the bioload if left too long. Rinse it in old tank water, never under chlorinated SG tap, to avoid knocking back any bacteria it has picked up, and replace it once the fibres stop springing back.
