UP D622S S-Undergravel Filter
An undergravel filter is one of the oldest and most reliable filtration methods, and the UP D622S brings that simplicity to small freshwater or marine setups. A perforated plate sits beneath your substrate and water is drawn down through the gravel, turning the whole bed into a large biological filter colonised by beneficial bacteria. With no fragile media to clog and few moving parts, it’s a quiet, low-fuss option that suits beginners and back-up filtration alike.
It works best with coarse gravel rather than fine sand or aquasoil, which can pack down and block flow, so plan your substrate around it. In our 27-29C climate, the constant pull through the bed helps oxygenate the substrate and keep the bacterial colony active. Vacuum the gravel during water changes so detritus doesn’t accumulate underneath and reduce flow over time, and pair it with an air pump or powerhead to drive the uplift.
