At roughly 58.4cm x 29.2cm, this plate suits a typical 2ft footprint and turns your entire gravel bed into one big biological filter. Water is drawn down through the substrate, where beneficial bacteria colonise every grain, then returned via the uplift tubes. It is a quiet, low-cost approach we still recommend for fuss-free community tanks, goldfish, or fry-rearing where surface flow is best kept gentle.

Run it with an air pump for soft circulation or cap the uplifts with small powerheads if you want more turnover. Use coarse-to-medium gravel rather than fine sand, which can pack down and starve the plate of flow. Regular gravel vacuuming is essential here, since detritus settles fast in warm water and you do not want it clogging the bed. Add a sponge pre-filter on powerheads to keep fry safe.
