The VENY CFU-55 is an undergravel filter, a quietly effective old-school approach that turns your whole gravel bed into a large biological filter. We still recommend it for simple community and goldfish setups where you want robust, low-cost biological filtration without a bulky external unit cluttering an HDB cabinet. Water is drawn down through the substrate, so the gravel itself hosts the bacteria that process ammonia and nitrite in our warm, fast-cycling tanks.

A few local pointers help it perform. Undergravel plates work best with coarse gravel rather than fine planted-tank soil, and they are happiest in lightly to moderately planted tanks since dense root systems can block flow over time. We suggest pairing it with a powerhead or air pump for stronger pull, and gravel-vacuuming regularly so mulm does not accumulate beneath the plate and go anaerobic, which is the usual cause of trouble in tropical conditions.
