Hydrocotyle sp.”Japan” is the popular name of the plant in different plant forums. It is a variant of Hydrocotyle tripartita from South-East Asia.It is characterised by fast, compact growth and small, intense green leaves on vertical stems. The plant is carpet-forming (5-10 cm tall) and its compact growth can be promoted by physically pressing the carpet with your hand when maintaining your aquarium (mechanical retardation). Carefully take the plant out of the cup and rinse off the growing media under the tap.
Split the plant in 6-8 portions using your fingers or sharp scissors (for small foreground plants).
Plant portions into the substrate using tweezers. Then watch them grow!

The small, intensely green, clover-like leaves spread fast into a textured mat that looks fresh in nano and mid-sized layouts alike. As a tissue-culture cup it arrives free of snails, algae and pesticides, so it is an easy, shrimp-safe pick for hobbyists building a clean planted tank from scratch.

Its growth is quick and compact, which is both the appeal and the catch. In our warm 27-29C water with CO2 and good light, it can stack into a thick cushion, so press the carpet down by hand during maintenance to encourage it to creep horizontally rather than climb. Trim regularly and it stays low and tidy, perfect for the front of an apartment-sized aquarium.
