Pogostemon Helferi
Aquarists in Thailand, close to the border with Burma, discovered this plant.
It is called ‘Downoi’ (little star) in Thailand, and it is easy to see why (5-10 cm tall and wide).
Pogostemon helferi is an unusual and distinctive aquatic plant with a compact habit, curly leaves and a strikingly beautiful green colour.
With good light conditions and a nutrient-rich substrate, Pogostemon helferi forms many side shoots that develop small roots, and the plant rapidly forms an impressive carpet of foreground vegetation.

Tropica Pogostemon Helferi in Pot: Potted Downoi for SG Tanks
This potted form of Pogostemon helferi, the curly “Downoi” star plant from the Thai-Burmese border, gives you an established clump ready to split and plant. Unlike tissue culture, the potted version arrives already grown emersed in rockwool, so you get more usable material per pot, handy when you want to fill a foreground quickly. Each little star, 5-10cm tall and wide, brings that unmistakable crinkled texture and vivid green to the front of a scape.
To plant it, gently pull the clump from the pot and tease away the rockwool, then separate it into smaller portions and space them across the substrate. With strong light and a nutrient-rich base it sends out side shoots that root and spread into a dense carpet. It prefers CO2 and stable water; in our warm 27-29C tanks, steady conditions matter more than the exact temperature.
