Dwarf Gourami originates in the waters of India and is not only beautiful but they can be particularly hardy as well. The male is more colorful while the females are less colorful. Usually the female is gray in appearance. There are a couple of colour varieties including the Blue and the Flame Red. They make a great addition to a fully cycled community tank and are easy to care for in general. Some hobbyists find that these gouramis tend to be a bit too aggressive with conspecifics and choose to keep one to a tank.

How To Safely Add Fish To Tank

  1. Set live stock aside with transportation bag in room temperature place for 30 minutes.
  2. Then transfer bag to float in aquarium for another 30 minutes
  3. Use a fish net to transfer the live stock by scooping it from the bag into the tank.

Note: Do not release live stocks together with the transportation water into tank.

Keeping the Balloon Gourami in Singapore

The Balloon Gourami is a rounded, selectively bred body form of the dwarf gourami, a labyrinth fish that can breathe air from the surface. That trait makes it forgiving in tanks with modest oxygenation, and its small adult size suits the compact aquariums common in HDB flats and condos. As a peaceful surface-to-mid swimmer, it pairs well with calm community fish, though males show the brightest colour and can be a touch territorial with each other.

Because gouramis gulp air at the surface, keep the tank lid on but leave a warm air gap above the water; in our humid 27-29C climate that warm, moist layer protects their labyrinth organ from chilling. They do well in our soft, slightly acidic conditioned tap water and rarely need a heater here. Provide calm flow, some floating or tall plants for cover, and a varied diet of quality flakes plus occasional frozen foods.
