Green Chromis Care Guide

Watching a shoal of green chromis drift over a reef is one of the most calming sights in the saltwater hobby. This green chromis care guide for marine aquariums covers everything you need to keep Chromis viridis healthy and thriving in a Singapore home reef. At Gensou Aquascaping, we often recommend this species as the ideal dither fish for community reef setups — affordable, peaceful, and endlessly active.

Species Profile

Green chromis belong to the damselfish family, yet they lack the territorial aggression that gives their relatives a bad reputation. Adults reach roughly 7-8 cm in length. Their iridescent blue-green body shimmers under reef lighting, adding movement and colour to the mid-water column that corals alone cannot provide. Wild-caught specimens dominate the Singapore market, typically priced at $5-10 SGD each from Serangoon North area shops.

Tank Size and Schooling Numbers

Because green chromis are schooling fish, keep them in groups of five or more. Odd numbers — five, seven, or nine — tend to distribute aggression more evenly than even groups. A 150-litre tank comfortably houses a group of five alongside other peaceful reef fish. Larger tanks of 250 litres and above let you maintain bigger shoals where their natural schooling behaviour truly shines.

Water Parameters and Temperature

Maintain salinity at 1.024-1.026, pH between 8.0 and 8.4, and temperature at 25-27 degrees C. Singapore’s warm climate means consistent chiller or cooling fan use is essential, especially during the hotter months from March to June. Ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero. Green chromis tolerate moderate nitrate levels up to 20 ppm, but lower is always better in a reef environment.

Feeding Green Chromis

These fish are planktivores in the wild, feeding on tiny crustaceans in the water column. In captivity, they eagerly accept frozen mysis shrimp, cyclops, and finely crushed marine flakes. Feed two to three times daily in small amounts — this mimics their natural grazing pattern and reduces competition within the group. Enriching frozen foods with a vitamin supplement once or twice a week supports their immune system and keeps their colour vibrant.

Behaviour and Social Dynamics

Despite their peaceful reputation, green chromis do establish a pecking order within the group. It is not unusual for the smallest individual to be bullied or for the group to gradually thin out over time. Providing plenty of rockwork with hiding spaces gives subordinate fish refuge. Starting with a slightly larger group than your target number accounts for natural attrition — begin with seven if you want five long-term residents.

Compatible Tankmates

Green chromis coexist beautifully with clownfish, firefish, royal grammas, and most peaceful wrasses. Avoid housing them with aggressive damsels, large dottybacks, or predatory fish that could view them as snacks. A cleanup crew of hermit crabs, turbo snails, and peppermint shrimp complements the community perfectly without causing any conflict.

Common Issues and Prevention

Marine ich is the primary concern, particularly with wild-caught specimens. Always quarantine new arrivals for two to four weeks. Watch for rapid breathing or white spots, and treat with copper in the quarantine tank if needed. Aside from disease, the most common problem is group attrition — maintaining stable water quality and offering multiple feeding spots across the tank helps every fish in the shoal get its share.
