Hikari Praziquantel Review Guide: Fluke and Tapeworm
If you have ever watched a supposedly healthy new arrival breathe rapidly with one gill cover flared 24 hours into quarantine, the odds are strong you were looking at monogenean flukes. This Hikari praziquantel review guide covers the Japanese-branded PraziPro-style product that has quietly become the default dewormer in Singapore fishrooms. Written by the team at Gensou Aquascaping in 5 Everton Park, it draws on years of quarantining imports from Hikari, Meridian and Sanshu shipments where gill and skin flukes are effectively guaranteed.
What Praziquantel Actually Does
Praziquantel is a pyrazino-isoquinoline compound that disrupts calcium homeostasis in flatworm muscle, causing flukes and tapeworms to lose their grip on host tissue and die within 24 to 48 hours. It does not affect fish, shrimp, snails, most corals or plants at therapeutic dose, which makes it one of the safest antiparasitics available. Hikari supplies it as a micronised soluble powder, which dissolves far more cleanly in soft Singapore tap than the older crystalline form.
What It Treats
The big three targets are monogenean gill flukes, body flukes and tapeworms. It also knocks back some trematode cercariae encysting in fish skin. It does not touch Ich, velvet, bacterial infections, or fungi, so misdiagnosis wastes time and money — start with our parasite identification guide before dosing. Flukes present as flashing, clamped fins, rapid gill rate, and occasional yawning behaviour.
Dosing Fresh and Marine
Freshwater dose is 2.5 mg per litre as a single addition, repeated at day 5 to catch freshly hatched juveniles from residual eggs. Marine dose is identical at 2.5 mg per litre but often ramped over three doses at day 0, 5 and 10 because tropical reef temperatures accelerate fluke life cycles. Our praziquantel dosing guide covers the exact weighing procedure for the powdered form.
Dissolving the Powder Correctly
Hikari praziquantel is poorly water-soluble, which is why the powder floats or clumps if you shake it straight into the tank. Pre-mix the measured dose in 100 ml of warm PUB tap water with a tiny drop of DMSO or ethanol — that is the industry trick used in quarantine racks. Drip the suspension slowly into high-flow areas near the filter intake and leave the skimmer off for 8 hours.
Why It Is Safer Than Other Options
Formalin and organophosphates like trichlorfon work against flukes but are far more toxic to fish, scaleless species and sensitive invertebrates. Praziquantel’s therapeutic index is exceptional — fish tolerate 5 to 10 times the effective dose without visible stress. It is also plant-safe and shrimp-safe at label dose, which is why it has become the default first-line dewormer in mixed community tanks and our quarantine protocol.
Quarantining Imports in Singapore
Our tropical 28 to 30 degree ambient accelerates the fluke life cycle, so any new freshwater fish from Iwarna, C328, Y618 or Polyart should be dosed prophylactically on arrival. Run a dedicated 40 to 60 litre quarantine tub set up per our freshwater quarantine setup guide, with a cycled sponge filter and no carbon for the 14-day treatment window. Skip chemical media entirely — it strips prazi within hours.
Marine Reef and Coral Safety
Praziquantel is safe for most SPS, LPS and soft corals, but some gorgonians and sensitive xenia show minor polyp retraction at day one that resolves by day three. Turn the protein skimmer off for 8 to 12 hours after dosing — it pulls the prazi out of solution via foam fractionation and wastes the dose. UV sterilisers break it down too, so unplug them until the treatment course ends.
Availability and Pricing
Hikari’s 5 gram sachet runs $18 to $24 at Iwarna, C328 and Polyart — enough to treat around 2,000 litres. The 25 gram tub at $65 to $78 is much better value for serious breeders and reef keepers. Watch Shopee and Lazada for authentic Hikari holograms; counterfeit powder has been reported and often contains under-dosed filler. Store sealed in a cool dry cupboard away from SP Group humidity spikes.
When to Repeat or Stop
Dose at day 0 and day 5 for gill flukes — their eggs take 4 to 6 days to hatch at 28 degrees, so a single dose misses the second generation. Tapeworm eradication typically needs three doses at weekly intervals. If flashing persists after a full course, the pathogen is probably not flukes — revisit your differential and consider a vet consultation.
Verdict
Hikari praziquantel is the cornerstone of any serious quarantine kit in Singapore. It is gentle enough for community tanks, potent enough to clear most fluke loads within 48 hours, and priced reasonably for routine prophylactic use. Pair it with proper hospital tank hygiene, a decent scope for skin scrapes, and patience across the full dosing window, and you will dodge the fluke outbreaks that plague less-prepared keepers.
