Chlorophytum Bichetii in Aquariums and Paludariums
Chlorophytum Bichetii is a hardy, grassy plant often sold for aquarium use, but it is not a true submerged aquatic; it performs best grown emersed with its roots in water and leaves in the air. That makes it a natural fit for paludarium margins, riparium baskets and the emersed sections of a Singapore scape, where its arching blades soften hardscape edges and pull nitrate from the water.
Kept fully submerged it will usually decline over time, so we suggest planting it where the crown can sit at or just above the waterline. In our humid climate the emersed foliage thrives, and the roots still offer cover and grazing surface for shrimp and small fish below. Trim runners to keep it neat in a compact layout.
Grow it the way it wants and it rewards you. Our emersed vs submersed guide and emersed section guide explain placement. See more greenery in live plants.
