Description

Hemianthus micranthemoides from North America is a graceful plant whose small, arched leaves make it look like a miniature version of Egeria. It has a characteristic trailing growth in intensive light, so it can be used as a foreground plant (stems from 10-20 cm tall, 2-3 cm wide). A compact group of Hemianthus micranthemoides is very beautiful with its small, light-green leaves.
In terrariums the plant forms a compact cushion.
Used to be called Micranthemum micranthemoides.

Hemianthus micranthemoides as a Singapore foreground plant

Supplied as a clean 1-2-Grow! tissue culture cup, this Hemianthus arrives free of algae, snails and pesticides, which is a real head start in our climate where introduced pests spread fast. We separate the gel-bound portions into small clumps, rinse off the nutrient medium, and plant them a couple of centimetres apart so they knit into a low, light-green cushion. Under strong light it stays creeping; under weaker light the stems reach upward instead.

To carpet well it does want decent light, good flow and ideally some added CO2, so it suits a higher-tech scape more than a shaded low-tech tank. In our warm 27-29C water it grows quickly once established, so plan on regular trimming to keep the mat dense rather than leggy. Trimmings can be replanted straight into gaps to thicken the foreground.

Browse the rest of our live plants for companions. New keepers should read our guide on how to plant carpet plants and our notes on fixing melting tissue culture plants for a smooth start.
