Rhaphidophora Spp.: An Easy Epiphyte for Wood and Rock
Rhaphidophora is a hardy aroid-type aquatic plant best grown as an epiphyte, attached to driftwood or rock rather than buried in substrate. Its creeping rhizome and rooting habit let it grip hardscape and slowly spread, giving a natural, jungle-edge look that suits the wood-and-stone aquascapes many Singapore hobbyists favour. Because it draws nutrients from the water column, it is a useful, low-fuss plant that helps absorb nitrate while adding cover and texture for fish and shrimp.
Like most epiphytes it is forgiving and tolerant of low-to-medium light, so it works in tanks without injected CO2. Tie or glue the rhizome to your hardscape and let it attach naturally rather than planting it into the substrate, which can rot the base. Our chloraminated tap water is fine once dechlorinated, and our warm ambient suits it; just give new tissue-culture or potted plants a short, gentle acclimation before they go in.
