Description
Schismatoglottis prietoi can resemble Anubias, wit 3-8 cm long, eliptic leaves. Growth is faster, though, and it grows best planted in the bottom layer, where it willingly produces runners.
It is an undemanding and easy plant, thriving very well in most aquaria, even in very poor light. Schismatoglottis prietoi naturally grows in rivers of the Phillipines, where it often appears in large, dense groups.

Schismatoglottis prietoi: A Low-Light Alternative to Anubias
We often describe this Philippine plant as an Anubias that actually wants to be planted in the substrate. The compact, elliptic leaves give a similar tidy, dark-green look, but it grows from runners in the bottom layer and spreads into dense little groups over time. Crucially for many local tanks, it is genuinely undemanding and thrives even in poor light, which makes it ideal for low-tech HDB setups or shaded corners where fussier species struggle.
Because it propagates by runners, give it a foreground or midground pocket with some room and it will gradually colonise the area on its own terms. In our warm 27-29C tanks it stays slow and stable rather than weedy, so it needs little intervention once settled. Arriving as a clean tissue-cultured portion, it goes in free of nuisance snails and pest algae, which is reassuring in a shrimp or nano tank.
If you have grown Anubias before, our Anubias plant guide gives helpful context, and our tissue-culture aquascape notes cover starting clean. Browse more options across our live plants range, and prep new arrivals with our plant quarantine guide.
