Ficus Quercifolia as an Emersed Hardscape Plant

This oak-leaf creeping fig is a terrestrial that shines in paludariums, ripariums and the emersed sections of open-top aquascapes rather than fully submerged. We love it for clothing wood and rock above the waterline with tiny, intricately veined leaves that bring a bonsai-like maturity to a layout. Singapore’s naturally high humidity is a real advantage here, keeping the foliage lush with far less effort than in drier climates.

Its fine roots and clinging stems gradually grip damp hardscape, so over time the plant knits itself onto driftwood and stone for a wonderfully aged look. Mist it during dry monsoon-season spells if your tank lid is fully open, keep the roots in contact with moisture, and give it bright but indirect light. Treat it as a slow, characterful accent rather than a quick carpet, and it will keep improving the scene for months.

Explore our other live plants, and read our riparium build guide and emersed section guide to position it well.
