Homalomena Red Velvet for the Midground

Homalomena Red Velvet is a slow, hardy aroid that we like to think of as an anubias-style plant with warmer tones. Its deep reddish, velvety foliage holds colour without the intense light demands of true red stem plants, making it a low-fuss accent for the midground. Being undemanding, it copes well in the typical Singapore community tank running at ambient temperature with conditioned soft tap water, no heater required.

Like other aroids it grows from a rhizome, so the golden rule is never to bury that rhizome in the substrate or it will rot. Instead anchor it to driftwood or rock, or rest it on the surface with the roots tucked in. It feeds largely from the water column, so steady liquid fertiliser keeps the leaves rich; CO2 is optional but does tighten growth and deepen the colour.
