Homalomena sp. Broad Cuneate (Red Stem) Care
This broad-leaved Homalomena with its distinctive red stems is a handsome midground plant that brings both colour and a bolder leaf shape to a scape. We find these wild-type aroids hardy and adaptable, well suited to the typical Singapore tank where ambient temperatures sit in the high twenties and a heater is rarely needed. Conditioned local tap water, soft and slightly acidic, is exactly the kind of water this group enjoys.
The familiar aroid rule applies: keep the rhizome above the substrate and let only the roots go in, or attach the whole plant to driftwood and stone. It feeds mostly through the water column, so consistent liquid fertiliser supports the leaf colour and the reddish stems. Growth is slow and steady, which is a virtue in lower-maintenance layouts; CO2 is optional but encourages fuller, more compact development.
