Caring for the Jewel Vrydagzynea Tristiata ‘Pink’ in Singapore
This is a jewel orchid rather than a true aquatic, prized for its dark velvety leaves and pink-tinged veining. We see it most often used in our wabi-kusa and terrarium-style projects, or grown emersed along the back of an open paludarium where the leaf colour really sings. Singapore’s naturally high humidity is a genuine advantage here, since jewel orchids thrive in the damp, sheltered air that frustrates hobbyists in drier climates.
Treat it as a humidity-loving terrestrial: keep the roots in a moist, airy substrate rather than fully submerged, give it soft diffused light away from harsh midday sun, and avoid letting the crown sit waterlogged. Our chloraminated tap water is fine once dechlorinated, and the steady warmth indoors suits it year-round. Grown well, it spreads slowly into a low, jewelled clump that pairs beautifully with mosses and ferns.
It sits among our broader live plants range. For companion planting in damp, emersed setups see our emersed section guide and our floating and epiphyte planting ideas.
