Marsilea Hirsuta Care Guide: The No-CO2 Carpet Plant

Table of Contents

What Is Marsilea Hirsuta?

Marsilea Hirsuta is an aquatic fern from Australia that has become one of the most popular carpeting plants in the hobby. Above water, it produces the characteristic four-leaf clover shape that gives the genus its common name. What makes it particularly appealing to Singapore hobbyists is its remarkable tolerance for low-tech conditions.

In a hobby where most carpeting plants demand high light and pressurised CO2, Marsilea Hirsuta is one of the very few species that forms a genuine carpet without CO2 injection. For hobbyists running simple HDB or condo setups without the space or budget for CO2 systems, this plant is a genuine game-changer. At Gensou, we have grown it in both high-tech and low-tech displays at 5 Everton Park and consistently recommend it for forgiving yet attractive foregrounds.

Why Marsilea Hirsuta Is Special

Most popular carpets — HC Cuba, Glossostigma, Eleocharis species — all require high light and CO2 to spread horizontally. Marsilea Hirsuta breaks this pattern with several key advantages:

  • No CO2 required: It will carpet, albeit slowly, without any CO2 injection.
  • Low to medium light tolerance: A decent mid-range LED is sufficient.
  • Extremely hardy: Once established, it tolerates neglect better than almost any other carpet plant.
  • Unique aesthetic: Clover-like leaves offer a different texture from fine-leaved hairgrass or HC Cuba.

The trade-off is speed. Marsilea Hirsuta is the slowest-growing carpet plant available. Patience is not optional with this species; it is the primary requirement.

Light Requirements

Marsilea Hirsuta grows under a remarkably broad range of lighting. It survives under low light (20-30 PAR) and thrives under medium to high light (50-100+ PAR). Light intensity affects both growth speed and leaf shape.

Light Level PAR at Substrate Growth Behaviour
Low 20-30 Slow growth, taller leaves, multi-lobed
Medium 30-60 Moderate growth, mixed leaf forms
High 60-100+ Faster growth, compact single-lobed leaves

A standard planted tank LED running for 7-8 hours daily provides more than enough. No need for a premium high-output fixture for this plant.

CO2 and Fertilisation

CO2 injection is genuinely optional. Adding CO2 accelerates growth roughly two to three times, but it is not a reason to set up CO2 solely for this species.

Marsilea Hirsuta is a root feeder, drawing most nutrients through its extensive runner system. A nutrient-rich substrate (ADA Amazonia, Tropica Aquarium Soil) provides an excellent foundation. If using inert substrate like sand, supplement with root tabs every 2-3 months. Liquid fertilisation is helpful but secondary.

Water Parameters for Singapore

Parameter Ideal Range SG Tap Water (Typical)
Temperature 20-30°C 28-30°C (within range)
pH 6.0-7.5 7.0-7.5
GH 2-12 dGH 2-4 dGH
KH 1-6 dKH 1-3 dKH

Marsilea Hirsuta is exceptionally adaptable to Singapore conditions, tolerating our warm temperatures and soft water without issue. Always dechlorinate with a product that neutralises PUB’s chloramine treatment.

Leaf Shape Changes Underwater

Marsilea Hirsuta undergoes a dramatic leaf transformation between emersed and submersed growth, which causes confusion for first-time growers:

  1. Weeks 1-2: Existing emersed four-leaf clover leaves may yellow and die off. This is normal — do not pull the plant out.
  2. Weeks 2-4: New growth appears as two-lobed or three-lobed leaves, smaller than the original form.
  3. Weeks 4-8: Under medium to high light, the plant produces single-lobed leaves that lie flat against the substrate — the desirable carpet form.
  4. Months 2-6: Runners spread outward and the carpet gradually fills in.

Under lower light, the plant may retain its multi-lobed clover shape even when fully submersed, creating a different but still attractive look.

Planting and Propagation

  1. Remove from tissue culture cup and rinse away all gel thoroughly.
  2. Separate into small portions of 3-5 leaves each.
  3. Using fine tweezers, plant each portion 1-2 cm apart across the desired carpet area.
  4. Push the runner section firmly into the substrate.

Spacing portions evenly across the entire area accelerates coverage compared to planting everything in one spot. Fine-grained substrate makes planting easier and allows runners to spread readily.

Marsilea Hirsuta propagates through runners that creep horizontally through the substrate, sending up new leaves at regular intervals. Once established, trim any leaves growing taller than the rest and thin sections that become too dense. The slow growth means maintenance is rarely needed more than once a month.

Comparison With Other Carpet Plants

For a comprehensive breakdown, see our aquarium carpet plant comparison guide.

Plant CO2 Needed? Light Speed Difficulty
Marsilea Hirsuta No Low-Medium Slow Easy
Monte Carlo Recommended Medium-High Moderate Moderate
HC Cuba Yes High Moderate Hard
Dwarf Hairgrass Yes High Moderate Moderate
Glossostigma Yes Very High Fast Hard

Marsilea Hirsuta is the slowest but also the easiest by a considerable margin. For hobbyists who prioritise simplicity and do not mind waiting, it is the clear choice for a no-CO2 carpet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Marsilea Hirsuta take to carpet without CO2?

Expect 4-6 months for reasonable coverage from a single tissue culture cup in a 60 cm tank. With CO2, this shortens to approximately 2-3 months. Plant more portions spread across the area for faster coverage.

Why are my Marsilea Hirsuta leaves melting after planting?

This is the emersed-to-submersed transition and is completely normal. Most Marsilea Hirsuta is grown above water at commercial farms. The original emersed leaves die off while new submersed growth appears within 2-4 weeks. Do not uproot or discard the plant during this phase.

Will Marsilea Hirsuta stay flat or grow tall?

This depends on light. Under medium to high light, the plant produces small, single-lobed leaves that lie close to the substrate (1-3 cm tall). Under low light, it grows taller (3-6 cm) with larger clover-shaped leaves. Both forms are attractive, but the flat, compact growth is what most aquascapers aim for.
