Persicaria São Paulo Care Guide: Fiery Red Showstopper
This persicaria sao paulo care guide explores one of the most intensely coloured stem plants available to aquascapers today. With leaves that range from hot pink to fiery crimson, Persicaria sp. “São Paulo” commands attention in any layout. At Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, we consider it among the best red accent plants for hobbyists who want dramatic colour without resorting to the most demanding species in the hobby.
Origin and Identification
Persicaria sp. “São Paulo” is a relatively recent addition to the aquascaping scene, originating from collections in Brazil. It belongs to the Polygonaceae family, which also includes the well-known Persicaria (formerly Polygonum) sp. “Kawagoeanum.” The São Paulo variety is distinguished by its broader leaves and more vivid red to magenta colouration under optimal conditions.
Submersed leaves are elliptical, growing alternately along a sturdy stem. When healthy and well-lit, the foliage displays a gradient from orange-red at the tips to deeper crimson on mature leaves. The plant reaches a moderate height of 20 to 35 centimetres, making it suitable for midground or background placement depending on tank size.
Lighting for Maximum Colour
High light is essential for drawing out the best colour from Persicaria São Paulo. Aim for at least 80 to 120 PAR at substrate level. Under lower light, the plant survives but the vivid reds fade to a muted brownish-green that defeats the purpose of growing this species.
Full-spectrum LED fixtures with enhanced red and blue wavelengths tend to produce the most spectacular results. Keep the photoperiod to seven or eight hours to balance colour development against algae risk, especially in newer setups.
CO2 and Nutrient Requirements
Pressurised CO2 is highly recommended for Persicaria São Paulo. Inject at 25 to 35 parts per million for optimal growth and colour. Without CO2, the plant grows slowly and rarely achieves its full colour potential.
This species benefits from rich fertilisation. Dose a complete regime including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and a comprehensive trace mix. Iron is particularly important for red pigment production — consider supplementing with a dedicated iron chelate if your all-in-one fertiliser does not provide sufficient levels. Some hobbyists find that slightly limiting nitrogen while maintaining high iron and phosphorus pushes the red colour further, though this technique requires careful monitoring.
Water Parameters
Persicaria São Paulo prefers soft to moderately hard water with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. A general hardness of 3 to 8 dGH is ideal. If your Singapore tap water is on the harder side, consider mixing with reverse osmosis water or using an aquasoil that naturally softens and acidifies the water column.
Temperature tolerance ranges from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius. Singapore’s ambient warmth is manageable for this species, though a cooling fan during the hottest months helps maintain the lower end of this range, which tends to produce slightly more compact growth.
Planting and Aquascaping Placement
Position Persicaria São Paulo as a midground focal point or a background accent. Its intense colour draws the eye, so place it at or near a key focal point in your layout. Pair it with bright green species such as Rotala green or Micranthemum to maximise the contrast effect.
Plant stems individually, spacing them about three centimetres apart. Use nutrient-rich aquasoil for the best results. The root system is moderately strong but benefits from a substrate depth of at least four centimetres for secure anchoring.
Propagation and Trimming
Trim Persicaria São Paulo when stems approach the water surface. Cut the top eight to twelve centimetres and replant the cutting, which will root within a week. The original stump produces side shoots that create a fuller appearance over successive trim cycles.
Avoid letting the plant grow unchecked to the surface, as the upper leaves will shade the lower portions and cause them to deteriorate. Regular fortnightly trimming maintains a healthy, vibrant column of colour from substrate to top.
Common Challenges
Colour loss is the most frequent complaint. If your São Paulo turns green or brown, evaluate your lighting intensity and iron dosing first. These two factors have the greatest influence on pigmentation. Ensure CO2 levels are stable throughout the photoperiod, as fluctuating CO2 can stress the plant and inhibit colour development.
Melting upon introduction is common, particularly with tissue-cultured specimens. Be patient — remove dead material and wait for new submersed growth, which typically appears within two weeks.
Why Persicaria São Paulo Is Worth the Effort
Few stem plants match the sheer intensity of red that Persicaria São Paulo produces under the right conditions. While it demands more attention than a basic green stem, the payoff is a living flame of colour that transforms any aquascape.
