Pond Leak Diagnosis Fix Guide: Liner Concrete and Bog

A pond losing 5cm a day is not evaporating — Singapore’s open-pond evaporation rate maxes out at roughly 8mm in a hot week. A faster drop means a leak, and the longer it runs, the more dechlor and refill cost stacks up. The pond leak fix protocol below is built around water-level diagnosis: where the pond stops dropping tells you where the leak sits. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers liner, concrete and bog filter leaks for landed-property and rooftop ponds.

Confirm It Is Actually a Leak

Mark the water level with a piece of tape on a fixed surface and check after 24 hours with the pump off. Normal evaporation in Singapore: 1-1.5cm per day on a sunny pond, less when shaded or covered. If the drop exceeds 2cm with the filter off, you have a leak. Run the test twice — once pump on, once pump off — to localise the problem to the pond body or the plumbing loop.

Use Water Level to Pinpoint the Zone

Let the pond drop until it stops. The water level when it stops marks the leak height. If it drops to the bottom, the leak is at the floor or below. If it stops 30cm down, the leak is at that horizontal level. If it stops just below the waterfall return, the leak is in the waterfall plumbing or basin. This single observation eliminates 80 per cent of the search area.

EPDM Liner Patching

EPDM rubber liners (the most common Singapore pond material) patch with EPDM repair tape and a primer. Drain to 5cm below the leak point, clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol, apply primer, then press the patch firmly with a roller. Cure for 24 hours before refill. Patches hold for years if the underlying liner is sound. Stock EPDM patch kits from the pond equipment range; expect SGD 60-120 per kit.

Concrete Pond Crack Repair

Hairline cracks in concrete ponds need a flexible waterproofing membrane — Sika Sikalastic or Kemiko penetrating sealer are the two products most often used in Singapore. Drain fully, chase out the crack with a chisel to V-profile (2cm wide, 1cm deep), fill with hydraulic cement, then coat the entire interior with two layers of waterproofing membrane. Total downtime: 5-7 days. DIY material cost SGD 250-450, contractor SGD 1,500-3,500 depending on pond size.

Waterfall and Stream Leaks

If the pond level holds with the pump off but drops with the pump on, the leak is in the waterfall, stream or pump return line. Run the pump and inspect the entire flow path during daylight — wet patches, mud darkening, or moss growth on the wrong side of the liner all flag leaks. Most waterfall leaks are at the joint between the basin and the spillway, where liner is crimped or rocks have shifted.

Skimmer and Bottom Drain Connections

Plumbed connections at skimmer faceplates and bottom drain bulkheads are common leak points after 5+ years. Bulkhead gaskets harden under tropical UV and lose seal. Drain to below the connection, replace the gasket (SGD 8-25 per fitting), and re-torque the back nut. The pond equipment category stocks replacement bulkheads and gaskets in 50mm and 110mm sizes.

Bog Filter Plumbing Leaks

Bog filters leak at three places: the inlet bulkhead from the pond, the outlet bulkhead returning water, and the perforated distribution pipe inside the bog. Drain the bog to expose connections, swab dry, then refill slowly while watching each joint with a torch. Most bog leaks are PVC joint failures from poor solvent welding during build — re-cement with new fittings rather than patch.

Liner Punctures from Tree Roots

Roots from nearby palms, frangipani or banana plants can punch through 0.75mm EPDM liner over 3-5 years. If the leak is below grade and difficult to access, the cause is often root intrusion. Excavate around the suspected zone, cut back roots, install a root barrier (HDPE sheet) and patch from above. Long-term, plant trees at least 3m from pond edges.

Failed Sealant Around Rocks

Decorative rocks set into concrete or liner edges with silicone or polyurethane sealant pull free over time. Hairline gaps between rock and edge wick water out via capillary action — surprisingly fast. Re-seal with marine-grade polyurethane (Sikaflex 521 UV or similar), allow 7 days cure, then refill. Avoid generic bathroom silicone — it fails under continuous water immersion within months.

When to Call a Pond Builder

Some leaks justify professional repair: hidden bottom drain failures requiring full dig-out, structural concrete cracks wider than 2mm, or repeated leaks after multiple DIY patches. Singapore pond builders quote SGD 800-3,500 for diagnostic plus repair. Document your level-drop tests and patch attempts before the visit — it saves diagnostic time and cost.

Prevent the Next Leak

Three habits reduce future leaks: install access panels at all bulkheads for inspection without draining, photograph plumbing during the build for future reference, and inspect waterfall edges quarterly during dry-down for the first year. Most pond leaks are predictable from build details — capture those details while construction is fresh.
