What Is Rotala Macrandra?
Rotala Macrandra is widely regarded as the king of red stem plants. Originating from India, this species produces broad, wavy leaves that flush an intense crimson-magenta under ideal conditions. No other stem plant delivers quite the same depth of red colouration, which is why it remains a bucket-list species for serious aquascapers.
For hobbyists in Singapore, Rotala Macrandra care presents unique challenges. Our warm tap water (28-32 degrees Celsius without a chiller), PUB-treated chloramine, and the constraints of HDB and condominium setups all factor into success. At Gensou, we have grown Rotala Macrandra at 5 Everton Park for over two decades. It is demanding, but achievable when three pillars are met simultaneously: intense lighting, stable CO2 injection, and clean water with balanced fertilisation.
Light Requirements
Rotala Macrandra needs strong lighting with very little room for compromise. We recommend a minimum of 80-100 PAR at substrate level, though 120+ PAR produces the most vivid reds. For standard HDB tanks (60-90 cm), fixtures from Twinstar, Chihiros, or ONF provide adequate output. Run lights for 7-8 hours daily.
| Light Level | PAR at Substrate | Rotala Macrandra Response |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Below 50 | Melts, leggy growth, green leaves |
| Medium | 50-80 | Slow growth, pale pink colour |
| High | 80-120 | Good growth, red colouration |
| Very High | 120+ | Intense crimson, compact growth |
Position Rotala Macrandra where it receives direct, unobstructed light. Taller plants or floating species that cast shadows will noticeably reduce colour intensity.
CO2 and Fertilisation
CO2 Injection
Pressurised CO2 is non-negotiable. Target 25-35 ppm, verified with a drop checker showing consistent lime green throughout the photoperiod. The critical word is consistent — CO2 fluctuations are one of the top reasons Macrandra stunts or melts. Start injection 1-2 hours before lights on. In Singapore’s warm temperatures, CO2 degasses faster, so you may need a slightly higher bubble count than hobbyists in cooler climates.
Iron and Micronutrients
Iron is the single most important nutrient for red colouration. Dose a comprehensive micronutrient fertiliser with chelated iron (Fe DTPA or Fe EDTA) daily or every other day, targeting 0.1-0.2 ppm iron in the water column. Limiting nitrogen slightly (nitrates at 5-10 ppm rather than 20+) can enhance red pigmentation, but too little nitrogen causes stunting.
Water Cleanliness
Perform 30-50% weekly water changes without fail. Always treat replacement water with a dechlorinator that neutralises chloramine, as PUB uses chloramine rather than free chlorine.
Water Parameters for Singapore
| Parameter | Ideal Range | SG Tap Water (Typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 22-28°C | 28-30°C (may need chiller) |
| pH | 5.5-7.0 | 7.0-7.5 (CO2 will lower this) |
| GH | 3-8 dGH | 2-4 dGH |
| KH | 1-4 dKH | 1-3 dKH |
Singapore’s soft tap water suits Macrandra reasonably well. Temperature is the main concern — tanks often sit at 29-31 degrees without cooling. A fan cooling system or small chiller bringing temperatures to 26-27 degrees can make a noticeable difference.
Rotala Macrandra Varieties
- Rotala Macrandra (standard) — Classic broad, wavy, deep red leaves. Most demanding of the group.
- Rotala Macrandra Green — Somewhat easier to grow. Good starting point for hobbyists new to the species.
- Rotala Macrandra Mini — Smaller leaves, compact growth. Equally demanding as the standard variety.
- Rotala Macrandra Variegated — Irregular patches of pink, cream, and green. Rare, slow-growing, and highly sought after.
Trimming and Propagation
Unlike hardier stem plants that tolerate aggressive cutting, Macrandra responds best to a specific approach:
- Top-cutting method: Cut the top 8-12 cm of healthy stems and replant directly. Discard bare lower portions.
- Avoid repeated trimming: After two cuts on the same stem, pull it and replace with a fresh top cutting. Repeated trimming produces increasingly weak regrowth.
- Trim early: Once stems reach the surface and bend horizontally, lower portions shed leaves rapidly. Trim at about two-thirds height.
Always use sharp, clean scissors. Crushed stems heal poorly and are more susceptible to melting.
Why Rotala Macrandra Fails
After over 20 years at Gensou, the most common failure reasons in Singapore setups are:
- Insufficient light: The number one cause. A budget LED that works for Java Fern will not cut it.
- CO2 fluctuations: Unstable CO2 is worse than consistently low CO2. Fluctuations trigger melting.
- Dirty water: Skipping water changes leads to organic waste buildup that Macrandra cannot tolerate.
- Iron deficiency: Produces pale, washed-out growth rather than rich red.
- Excessive temperature: Tanks consistently above 30 degrees will struggle.
Comparison With Easier Red Plants
| Plant | Difficulty | CO2 Required? | Colour Intensity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotala Macrandra | Very Hard | Yes (mandatory) | Intense crimson |
| Rotala Rotundifolia | Easy | Helpful but not required | Pink to orange-red |
| Ludwigia Repens | Easy | Not required | Dark red undersides |
| Ludwigia Super Red | Moderate | Helpful | Deep red |
| Alternanthera Reineckii | Moderate | Helpful | Purple-red |
We recommend mastering Rotala Rotundifolia first. It shares many care principles with Macrandra but is far more forgiving. For a deeper look at achieving red colouration, read our guide on how to grow red aquarium plants.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Rotala Macrandra grow without CO2 injection?
In practical terms, no. The plant may survive briefly without CO2 but will not grow well and will eventually melt. DIY CO2 setups are also unreliable due to fluctuating output, which this species does not tolerate.
Why is my Rotala Macrandra turning green instead of red?
This almost always points to insufficient light or iron deficiency. Increase light intensity, ensure your fixture is adequate for the tank depth, and dose chelated iron. Slightly limiting nitrogen can also push colour towards red.
How long does Rotala Macrandra take to adapt after planting?
Expect a 2-4 week adjustment period. The plant may shed lower leaves or grow slowly during this time. Maintain stable parameters and resist the urge to move stems. If decline continues after four weeks, review your light, CO2, and water change routine.
