Ryukin Goldfish Pond Care Guide: High-Back Variety

Ryukin are the goldfish silhouette most people picture when they think of fancy goldfish — deep round bodies, dramatic high-back arch, and flowing double tails that ripple behind them like silk. A well-tuned ryukin goldfish pond needs gentle flow, balanced parameters and stocking densities suited to a fish that swims gracefully but not strongly. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers setup, water chemistry, feeding and Singapore sourcing for ryukin in tropical pond conditions.

Identifying a Quality Ryukin

True ryukin show a pronounced high-back arch immediately behind the head, a deep oval body, full dorsal fin, double anal and tail fins, and no wen. Carassius auratus selectively bred in Japan from the eighteenth century onward produced the form. The hump should rise sharply rather than slope gently — a strong arch is the variety’s signature trait.

Colour Morphs

Solid red, white, calico (red, white and black), and chocolate ryukin all appear in Singapore shops. Calico ryukin with strong black markings and clean white-and-red contrast command the highest prices. Show judging considers body shape over colour, but visual appeal in display ponds tends to favour the high-contrast calico form.

Pond Depth and Stocking

Ryukin tolerate pond depths from 40-80 cm and are stronger swimmers than ranchu or oranda thanks to the dorsal fin and balanced body shape. Stocking 1 fish per 100-150 litres gives comfortable space. The variety appreciates a longer swim path more than depth — rectangular pond shapes suit ryukin better than round bowls.

Filtration and Flow

Moderate flow is acceptable — ryukin handle gentle waterfall returns and standard biological filtration without exhaustion. Browse the pond equipment range for biological filter media and UV clarifiers. The double tail fins are delicate and shred against sharp pond edges, so smooth pebble margins and rounded substrate are essential.

Water Chemistry Targets

Aim for pH 7.0-8.0, GH 6-12, KH 4-7. Singapore PUB tap at GH 2-4 sits below ideal — buffer with crushed coral or limestone in the filter to lift hardness. Temperature 22-28°C is the comfortable range; ryukin tolerate the upper end of Singapore’s 28-32°C ambient with reduced stocking. The water treatment shelf stocks pH and KH buffers.

Feeding Strategy

Sinking pellets are recommended for ryukin to reduce swim bladder risk. Hikari Saki Hikari Goldfish, Aquaforest Goldfish and JBL Goldfish Sticks work well. Feed 2-3 times daily in small portions. Soak pellets for 30 seconds before adding to soften the outer layer. The fish food range stocks the standard sinking goldfish brands at Gensou.

Heat Tolerance in Singapore

Ryukin tolerate Singapore’s tropical heat better than ranchu and oranda — the dorsal fin and stronger swimming ability help with thermoregulation. Provide partial shade across at least 30-40 per cent of the pond surface during the March-May hot months. Floating plant coverage from water lettuce or salvinia gives natural shade and helps with dissolved oxygen.

Tankmates and Pondmates

Pair ryukin with other fancy goldfish like ranchu, oranda and fantails. The variety swims faster than ranchu so it can dominate at feeding — distribute pellets across multiple spots to ensure all fish eat. Avoid single-tail commons and comets which still outcompete ryukin. Avoid koi entirely. Groups of 4-6 ryukin in 600-900 litres show natural pond behaviour.

Common Diseases

Watch for ich (white spot), columnaris (cotton-mouth), and swim bladder disorder. The double tails are prone to fin rot from poor water quality — daily inspection catches early symptoms before damage spreads. Quarantine all new fish for 4-6 weeks before adding to the main pond. Aquarium salt at 0.3 per cent treats most early-stage bacterial issues.

Sourcing in Singapore

Iwarna Aquafarm, Polyart and C328 stock pet-grade ryukin at SGD 25-80 each. Show-grade calico ryukin from imported Japanese or Thai lines run SGD 80-300 per fish. Specialist Carousell breeders occasionally offload selected fry at SGD 30-100. Inspect for symmetric body arch, clean tail edges with no curl deformities, and active swimming before buying.
