It is a fine powder of activated carbon and organic acids sprinkled onto the base layer before you cap with aqua soil. The idea is simple: feed and shelter the microorganisms that do the slow biological work in a planted tank, helping the substrate become a stable, living foundation rather than inert dirt.

In Singapore tanks running at ambient 27 to 29C, microbial activity is already brisk, which can make the chaotic early weeks swing harder. A more populated substrate helps buffer those swings, supporting steadier nutrient cycling under your roots.
