Coloured Sand is a decorative substrate meant for aquariums, terrariums and garden displays, giving you bold tones that a natural sand simply cannot. It is the go-to for a child’s themed tank, a bright betta bowl or a craft setup where the look matters more than a biotope-accurate base. Sold in 1kg and 5kg packs, you can layer or band colours to build patterns across the floor of the tank.

Always wash it before use to clear loose dust and any surface residue, pouring off the cloudy water until it runs clear. Because it is a decorative sand rather than a planting soil, it offers no nutrients, so root-feeding plants will need root tabs to thrive on it. Keep your flow gentle near the surface so the lighter coloured grains stay put rather than drifting into mounds.
