SUDO S-8845 Jet Black Sand (5kg) for Planted and Shrimp Tanks

This SUDO Jet Black Sand is a carefully selected, pre-washed natural sand that lays down a deep, even black base. That dark substrate does real work visually: it makes fish colour and plant green pop, and it gives an aquascape the moody, contemporary look that’s popular in Singapore display tanks. Being all-natural and inert, it won’t alter your water parameters, so it stays neutral in our soft, slightly acidic tap water and suits freshwater fish, shrimp and even turtle setups.

A 5kg bag suits a small to mid display; as a rough guide, aim for a substrate depth of two to three centimetres so plant roots have purchase without the bed going anaerobic. The fine grain is gentle on the barbels of bottom-feeders like corydoras and loaches that root through it, a genuine advantage over sharp gravel. Sand doesn’t carry nutrients itself, so for demanding plants cap a nutrient layer beneath it or run root tabs, and stir the surface occasionally to release trapped gas.
