The Black Neon Tetra is another great fish for planted aquariums where slightly acidic water conditions are present. The Black Neon Tetra has a yellow-green stripe that runs the length of the body with a black region under the yellow-green stripe. It looks really neat when you see a school of this fish darting about.
This tetra is even smaller than the Cardinal Tetra and Neon Tetra and will display the same schooling behavior when kept in small groups of 6 or more. They are very peaceful and should not be kept with larger fish capable of eating them.

Black Neon Tetra: A Reliable Schooling Fish in Singapore
The Black Neon Tetra is an underrated community staple we recommend often, especially for planted tanks. A horizontal silver-and-black stripe with a glint of gold reads sharply against green plants and dark substrate, and a proper school of eight or more shows tight, coordinated movement. They are calmer and a touch hardier than the regular neon tetra, which makes them more forgiving for newer keepers building their first community.
These tetras genuinely thrive in our local water, since they originate from soft, slightly acidic South American streams that our SG tap broadly resembles. Most keepers run them comfortably at our 27-29C ambient without a heater. Keep them in numbers; a lone or paired tetra becomes timid and loses colour, while a real school stays bold and out in the open. Pair them with other peaceful nano fish and shrimp.
Always introduce a new school gradually, as detailed in our acclimation guide, and read the full species profile in our Black Neon Tetra care guide. Explore the range under tetra fish.
