Torch Coral Placement Zone Guide: Flow Light and Aggression

Among LPS investments, no coral rewards correct placement quite like the torch. Torch coral placement determines whether your SGD 200-2000 specimen flourishes for years or melts within a fortnight, because Euphyllia glabrescens sits at the intersection of demanding lighting, finicky flow and aggressive sweeper warfare. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park maps the placement zones inside a reef tank and explains the mistakes that destroy expensive torches in young systems.

The Three-Zone Reef Map

Mentally divide your reef into three vertical zones. The bottom zone (sand bed to 25 per cent height) gets 50-150 µmol PAR and low flow — for mushrooms, zoanthids, brain corals. The middle zone (25-65 per cent) gets 150-300 µmol and moderate flow — the torch zone. The top zone (65-100 per cent) gets 300-450 µmol and strong flow — SPS territory. Torches placed too high burn; placed too low, they stretch and starve.

Light Tier for Torches

Aim for 150-250 µmol PAR at the polyp head. Coloured morphs — Aussie Gold Torch, Indo Gold, Holy Grail, Hellboy — bleach faster than tan or green standard morphs. Acclimate over 14 days using shade screens or stepped intensity ramps. Position laterally too — a torch directly under an LED puck centre receives 30-40 per cent more PAR than one near the panel edge.

Flow Pattern

Torches want rhythmic, indirect flow that gently sways the tentacles without folding them. A Maxspect Gyre on low pulse, an Ecotech Vortech on Reef Crest mode at 30 per cent, or a Tunze 6055 with random controller covers the requirement. Laminar flow from a fixed powerhead causes the tentacles to fold at the base, leading to tissue recession after a fortnight. Browse pulse-mode wavemakers in the aquarium equipment range.

Distance From Other Corals

Sweeper tentacles extend 8-15 cm at night beyond the daytime footprint. Plot a 15 cm exclusion radius around every torch head. Hammer corals are the closest relatives but still sting unrelated torch lineages. Acan, frogspawn, brain corals, anemones and SPS all suffer tissue burn within days of contact.

Same-Genus Pairings

Torches from the same parent colony tolerate close placement, sometimes touching. Two specimens from different shipments — even both labelled Aussie Gold — typically wage chemical and physical war. The safest rule: assume no two torches are from the same lineage and space accordingly.

Aquascape Architecture for Torch Display

Build flat shelves and protrusions specifically for torch placement at the mid-zone. A torch on a frag plug glued to a 12 cm wide shelf shows the polyp in profile rather than top-down — far more visually striking. Use cyanoacrylate gel and reef epoxy from the aquascaping tools range to mount frag plugs into rockwork pockets.

Water Parameters

Salinity 1.025, alkalinity 7.5-8.5 dKH, calcium 420-440 ppm, magnesium 1320-1380 ppm, nitrate 3-10 ppm, phosphate 0.03-0.08 ppm. Torches reject high alkalinity above 9.0 dKH — burnt tip syndrome appears within 48 hours of an ALK swing. Quality salts and 2-part dosing components sit in the water care range.

Feeding

Spot-feed once or twice weekly with mysis, krill or oyster eggs. The polyp closes around the food and digests overnight. Feeding accelerates branching in Euphyllia glabrescens, with a single head producing daughters within four to six months under good conditions. Skip feeding when the coral is mid-sweeping at night.

Burnt Tip and Tissue Recession

The classic torch failure mode: tentacle tips turn beige or white and the polyp retracts. Causes include sudden ALK swings, unstable salinity, direct flow from a misaimed powerhead, or proximity stress from a new neighbour. Move the coral to a shaded corner with low flow and stable parameters for one to two weeks; healthy specimens recover.

Singapore Sourcing

Aquamarin, Iwarna and Reef Discus Centre rotate Aussie and Indo torches at SGD 90-450 per head. Premium morphs reach SGD 1500-3500 — wait until the shop has held the piece for at least three weeks before paying premium. Carousell trades happen at slight discounts. Pair purchases with coral RX or Bayer dip from the marine and saltwater range.
