Turtle Tank UVB Lighting Basking Setup Guide

Metabolic bone disease shows up as a soft, pyramided shell long before a turtle stops eating, and almost every case traces back to inadequate UVB exposure. A correct turtle uvb basking setup drives D3 synthesis, calcium absorption and natural shell hardening — without it, even the best diet will not keep a turtle healthy. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park walks through tube wattage, mounting distance, replacement cycles and the basking platform geometry that turns light into bone density.

Why UVB Matters More Than Heat

Reptiles synthesise vitamin D3 in the skin under UVB wavelengths around 290-315 nm. D3 unlocks dietary calcium and routes it to the shell, jawbones and skeleton. A heat lamp without UVB grows a turtle that looks fine for the first year, then collapses with deformed scutes and a rubbery plastron. Aquatic turtles, despite spending most of their time underwater, must bask to dry the shell, raise body temperature and absorb UVB simultaneously.

Choosing the Right UVB Tube

Linear T8 fluorescent tubes are the workhorse choice. Use UVB-T8 5.0 (5 per cent UVB output) for forest species like the matamata or musk turtle that bask infrequently. Use UVB-T8 10.0 (10 per cent UVB) for sun-loving species — red-eared sliders, painted turtles, map turtles and yellow-bellied sliders. Tube length should match basking platform width; an 18-inch 15W tube covers a 30 cm basking surface, while a 36-inch 30W tube covers larger platforms. Reflectors double effective output.

Mercury Vapour Combo Bulbs

Mercury vapour bulbs combine UVB, UVA and basking heat in a single fixture and suit larger enclosures over 200 litres. The Arcadia D3+ 80W covers basking from 30 cm distance; the 160W version reaches 45 cm. They run hot — never inside an enclosed glass top, and always on a ceramic socket rated for the wattage. Browse the aquarium equipment range for compatible reflector domes and ceramic bases.

Distance and Wattage Maths

UVB output drops with the inverse square of distance — double the gap and you quarter the dose. Mount a T8 10.0 tube 25-30 cm above the basking platform; further away and a turtle gets recreational lighting, not therapeutic UVB. Mercury vapour bulbs sit further (30-45 cm) because the heat would otherwise scorch the shell. Measure with a Solarmeter 6.5 if you can borrow one from a herp society — readings of 70-150 microwatts per square cm at the shell surface confirm therapeutic dose.

Basking Platform Geometry

The basking surface must be completely dry. Floating platforms work for small juveniles but adults sink them; stack flat slate or a custom acrylic dock above the waterline so the turtle climbs out fully. Surface temperature targets 32-35°C measured with an infrared thermometer at the spot the turtle actually rests. Ambient water sits cooler at 24-26°C so the turtle can thermoregulate by leaving the basking zone. A turtle tank with cabinet sized for full adult length gives room for the platform plus swim space.

Tube Replacement Schedule

A T8 UVB tube still glows visibly after a year but its UVB output collapses to under 30 per cent of new within 6-12 months. Replace tubes every six months in tropical climates because high humidity degrades the phosphor faster, and write the install date on the tube itself with a marker. Mercury vapour bulbs hold output for 12 months under similar conditions. Swap one bulb at a time so the turtle does not face a sudden change in light spectrum.

Fixture and Mounting in Singapore Tanks

Singapore HDB ceilings are low and tank lids are often glass — a problem because regular window glass blocks 95 per cent of UVB. Mount the UVB tube under a screen-top section, not glass. Many keepers cut a section of the lid and replace it with stainless mesh from local hardware shops. The aquarium lighting fixtures at Gensou include T8 reflector hoods sized 18, 24 and 36 inches.

Common Mistakes That Cause MBD

The classic failure mode in Singapore is a beautiful planted turtle tank with no basking platform because the keeper does not want to break the aquascape. The turtle hides underwater, never dries the shell, develops shell rot and metabolic bone disease within 18 months. Other common errors: tube mounted above glass, tube replaced every two years instead of six months, no calcium block in the tank to back up dietary intake, and reliance on indirect daylight from a window. UVB through window glass is functionally zero.
