20 Gallon Fish Tank Dimensions Guide: Long vs Tall vs High

This 20 gallon fish tank dimensions guide from Gensou Aquascaping Singapore at 5 Everton Park unpacks a deceptively tricky number. Twenty gallons is roughly 76 litres of water, but how those 76 L are distributed across length, width and height changes everything: the aquascape you can build, the fish that will thrive, and whether your HDB floor can handle the fully loaded weight. Singapore hobbyists walking into C328 or Y618 often point at a tank labelled “20 gallon” without realising three very different shapes share that label.

The Three Standard 20 Gallon Footprints

Industry-standard glass manufacturers such as Aqueon and Marineland ship three distinct 20 gallon moulds. The 20 Long measures 76 x 30 x 30 cm (30 x 12 x 12 inches). The 20 Tall is 60 x 30 x 40 cm. The 20 High (sometimes marketed as “regular 20”) is 60 x 30 x 41 cm with slightly different corner radii. All three hold approximately 76 L of water, yet the surface area at the waterline ranges from 1,800 sqcm on the Long to 1,200 sqcm on the Tall, a 33 percent difference that governs gas exchange and stocking density.

20 Long: The Aquascaper’s Favourite

The 76 x 30 x 30 cm 20 Long is the shape I recommend for 80 percent of Singapore aquascapes. The long, low profile allows Iwagumi layouts with three mountain stones, Dutch-style terraces, and jungle scapes where Vallisneria can stretch horizontally. Because the water column is only 30 cm deep, a modest 20-25 W LED such as the Chihiros WRGB II Slim punches all the way to the substrate, keeping carpets like Monte Carlo compact. Footprint is the aquascaping cheat code here.

20 Tall and 20 High: The Display Shapes

The 40-41 cm depth of the 20 Tall and 20 High looks dramatic in a living room but demands stronger lighting, roughly 35-40 W of quality LED to drive plants at the substrate. Fish that hover mid-water (angelfish juveniles, gouramis) appreciate the vertical swimming column. Bottom-dwellers like kuhli loaches and Corydoras feel cramped on the smaller 60 x 30 cm footprint. For a fish-first display tank, tall works; for a planted showpiece, it fights you.

Footprint Versus Water Volume

Two tanks with identical 76 L capacity can stock very differently. The surface area stocking rule from old-school hobbyists calculated 12 sqcm per cm of adult fish length. On that basis the 20 Long supports 150 cm of fish, while the 20 Tall caps out nearer 100 cm. Modern filtration narrows that gap but the underlying gas-exchange reality persists, especially in Singapore’s 28-30°C ambient where oxygen solubility drops.

Singapore HDB Floor Load Ratings

A fully loaded 20 gallon tank, substrate and stand combined, weighs 110-130 kg concentrated on a 76 x 30 cm or 60 x 30 cm footprint. HDB specifies 150 kg/sqm uniformly distributed live load for residential floors. Do the maths: 120 kg over a 0.23 sqm (20 Long) footprint equals 521 kg/sqm concentrated load, well above spec. In practice the reinforced concrete slab handles this without drama, but place the tank over a load-bearing wall line, not mid-span, and never on raised wooden platforms without checking the HDB floor load safety guide.

Lighting Penetration Across Depths

PAR readings taken at the substrate differ wildly by shape. A 25 W Twinstar B-Line 600 mounted 15 cm above the rim delivers 95 PAR on the 20 Long substrate, medium-high light territory. The same fixture on a 20 Tall reads 55 PAR at 40 cm depth, low-medium. If you are committed to a tall tank and want red plants like Ludwigia pantanal to colour up, budget for a 45 W fixture or add a second unit. See the PAR meter readings for Singapore tanks for comparative data.

Fish Swimming Patterns by Shape

Observing a school of 10 ember tetras across both shapes is revealing. In the 20 Long they patrol 76 cm of horizontal territory, displaying natural shoaling behaviour. In the 20 Tall they clump in the upper third, essentially ignoring the bottom 25 cm. Swimmers with horizontal orientation (tetras, rasboras, danios, barbs) want length. Climbers and hoverers (angelfish, discus juveniles, pearl gouramis) tolerate depth. Match shape to species, not the other way around.

Glass Thickness and Bracing

Standard 20 Long ships with 5 mm float glass and no centre brace. The 20 Tall’s 40 cm water column generates more pressure on the bottom pane, so quality builds use 6 mm glass or add a single plastic cross-brace. Inspect the silicone bead before buying second-hand on Carousell; a 3-year-old tank with yellowing or peeling silicone is 30 minutes from a 76 L flood.

Aquascaping Implications

On the 20 Long I can place hardscape 20 cm tall and still leave breathing room; visually it reads as a sprawling landscape. The 20 Tall forces vertical hardscape (driftwood stumps, tall stones) that dominates the volume and leaves less substrate real estate for carpeting plants. The Iwagumi 20 gallon long layout guide walks through stone placement for the Long specifically.

Singapore Sourcing Summary

C328 Clementi stocks the 20 Long at roughly SGD 85 and 20 Tall around SGD 95, both with basic black trim. Y618 Aquatic at Serangoon North carries premium rimless 20 Long builds in 6 mm ultra-clear glass for SGD 180-220. Green Chapter Jurong West offers house-brand 76 L tanks cut to request for SGD 150. Iwarna Aquafarm keeps the ADA-style 60P (60 x 30 x 36 cm, 65 L, close to 20 gallon) at SGD 280-320. Nature Aquarium Gallery on Thomson Road focuses on ADA 60P at SGD 340. Polyart can fabricate acrylic 20 gallon customs for SGD 250-400. Carousell second-hand 20 Longs trade at SGD 40-70; Shopee import glass units land at SGD 65-120 with longer shipping lead times.
