3 Gallon Betta Tank Setup Guide: Minimum Sensible Size

Three gallons is the widely accepted floor for keeping a betta humanely — any smaller and the fish is surviving, not living. This 3 gallon betta tank setup guide walks you through building an 11-litre home that your betta will actually enjoy, not just tolerate. Written from 5 Everton Park where Gensou Aquascaping has helped hundreds of first-time HDB keepers pick their first tank, the focus here is practical gear, sensible plants and avoiding the mistakes that kill so many pet-shop bettas in month one.

Why 3 Gallons Is the Sensible Minimum

A betta needs horizontal swimming space, access to the surface for labyrinth breathing, and enough water volume to dilute waste between changes. Two-gallon tanks make weekly parameter swings dangerous; 3 gallons [11 L] gives you genuine buffer without a big footprint. If you have space for 19 litres (5 US gallons), that is kinder still — but 11 litres is the point at which welfare becomes defensible.

Tank Shape Matters More Than Volume

A 30 × 20 × 20 cm cube beats a 20 × 20 × 30 cm tower every time, even at identical volumes. Bettas are surface-oriented and rest on leaves; a tall narrow tank forces constant swimming up and down past the same spot. The Dymax IQ3, ZeroUp Cubic 20 and AquaEL Shrimp Set 20 all work. Avoid curved-glass “show” shapes that distort the view and complicate maintenance.

Filtration That Will Not Shred Fins

A betta’s long finnage catches any meaningful flow. The best choice for 3 gallons is a sponge filter rated to 10 L/min, driven by a silent air pump such as the Hailea ACO-5502. Alternatively a small internal filter with a baffle (a cut water bottle works) cuts flow by half. HOB filters tend to be too strong at this scale. The sponge filter guide covers sizing in detail.

Long-Tail: Do You Need a Heater in a 3 Gallon Betta Tank Singapore

In Singapore’s 28-to-30-degree ambient, a heater is usually unnecessary for a betta — they thrive between 26 and 30 degrees. The exception is an air-conditioned bedroom running below 26 degrees overnight, where a 25 W heater set to 27 degrees protects the fish from chill stress. Cold bettas clamp fins, stop eating and develop fungal patches fast. If your aircon stays on most evenings, buy a small heater; otherwise skip it and save the shelf space.

Substrate and Hardscape

A 2 cm layer of inert dark sand or fine gravel suits a betta tank — dark substrates make colours pop and help the fish feel secure. Avoid sharp decor that tears fins. A single piece of spiderwood or a smooth seiryu rock anchors the scape. The dragon stone guide and seiryu stone guide both work at this scale.

Plants That Thrive With Low Tech

Skip carpet plants and CO2 injection at this volume. Stick to Anubias nana petite tied to hardscape, Java fern windelov on a rock, a clump of Christmas moss and one floater like red root floater or Amazon frogbit. Floaters diffuse top-mounted LED glare that bettas dislike and give bubble-nest building material. The aquascaping for betta guide has full planting schemes.

Lighting for a Betta Display

A 6 to 10 W clip-on LED at 5500 to 6500 K is plenty. Run it 7 hours a day via a mechanical timer. Bettas dislike bright sudden light, so pair the LED with floaters that break the intensity. Avoid 12-hour photoperiods — algae wins every time in small tanks. The clip-on light comparison covers local options.

Cycling Before Adding the Fish

Please do not fish-in cycle a betta in 11 litres. Seed the sponge with media from an established filter and run Seachem Stability for 7 days while dosing ammonia to 2 ppm. Alternatively, plant heavily and use the silent planted cycle approach in our planted cycling guide. Either way, test for 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite before the fish moves in.

Water Parameters and Singapore Tap

PUB tap water sits at GH 2 to 4 and pH around 7, which bettas tolerate well. Condition with Seachem Prime at 2 drops per litre to neutralise chloramine. A 25 percent weekly water change with temperature-matched water keeps nitrate below 20 ppm. Read PUB water safety if you are nervous.

Feeding and Enrichment

Feed 2 to 3 pellets twice a day, fasting one day per week to prevent constipation. Rotate in live or frozen bloodworm twice weekly. Float a small ping-pong ball or add a betta leaf near the surface for enrichment. A bored betta in 11 litres develops repetitive glass-surfing; a scaped tank with floaters usually does not.

What This Setup Costs Locally

Expect $60 to $120 total: tank $30 to $60, sponge filter and air pump $25, LED $20, substrate and hardscape $20, plants $15, conditioner $10. Shopee and Carousell bundles cut this further. The betta itself runs $5 to $30 depending on strain; a good halfmoon or koi betta from a C328 Clementi vendor is worth the premium over a cup-bought fish.
