Why 3 Gallons Is the Sensible Minimum
A betta needs horizontal swimming space, access to the surface for labyrinth breathing, and enough water volume to dilute waste between changes. Two-gallon tanks make weekly parameter swings dangerous; 3 gallons [11 L] gives you genuine buffer without a big footprint. If you have space for 19 litres (5 US gallons), that is kinder still — but 11 litres is the point at which welfare becomes defensible.
Tank Shape Matters More Than Volume

In Singapore’s 28-to-30-degree ambient, a heater is usually unnecessary for a betta — they thrive between 26 and 30 degrees. The exception is an air-conditioned bedroom running below 26 degrees overnight, where a 25 W heater set to 27 degrees protects the fish from chill stress. Cold bettas clamp fins, stop eating and develop fungal patches fast. If your aircon stays on most evenings, buy a small heater; otherwise skip it and save the shelf space.
Substrate and Hardscape

A 6 to 10 W clip-on LED at 5500 to 6500 K is plenty. Run it 7 hours a day via a mechanical timer. Bettas dislike bright sudden light, so pair the LED with floaters that break the intensity. Cycling Before Adding the Fish
Please do not fish-in cycle a betta in 11 litres. Seed the sponge with media from an established filter and run Seachem Stability for 7 days while dosing ammonia to 2 ppm. Feed 2 to 3 pellets twice a day, fasting one day per week to prevent constipation. Rotate in live or frozen bloodworm twice weekly.
