This 55 gallon fish tank dimensions guide covers everything you need to know about the iconic 4-foot classic before you commit to one. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, we’ve installed this format in BTOs, condos, shophouses and one notable landed property with a 30-year-old timber floor. The numbers below save you from the three most common mistakes: oversized stands, under-spec subfloors, and filters that don’t fit the cabinet.

Standard 55 Gallon Dimensions

Outside glass: 48 x 13 x 21 in (122 x 33 x 53 cm). Water volume: ~208 L. Glass thickness: typically 6 mm on rimmed builds, 8-10 mm on rimless. Black plastic trim top and bottom on traditional rimmed versions adds 2 cm height each side.

Why 13 Inches Front-to-Back

33 cm depth is narrow by modern standards. It’s why we often recommend 50 gallons (46 cm deep) over 55 gallons for serious aquascaping. The trade is footprint flexibility: 33 cm fits against TV consoles and low sideboards where a 46 cm deep tank overhangs dangerously.

Filled Weight

Water alone: ~208 kg. Add substrate (9-15 kg), rockwork (5-10 kg), stand (20-35 kg), filter (5 kg), and you land around 250-275 kg total. This is the HDB load-bearing wall threshold for 1 sq m footprint.

HDB Floor Load Check

Concrete slab BTO floors handle 250-275 kg against a load-bearing wall without concern. Mid-span placement in a large room is acceptable but not preferred. Timber subfloors (older shophouses, some pre-1990 HDB blocks) need a structural check. Our HDB aquarium floor load piece covers the specifics.

Stand Footprint Requirements

A proper 55 gallon stand matches the 122 x 33 cm glass footprint or slightly larger (125 x 38 cm is common). Steel frame 65-75 cm height (SGD $180-$280). Marine plywood cabinet with doors (SGD $320-$550). Avoid particle board — Singapore humidity kills it in 3 years.

Viewing Height

Standard 70 cm stand puts the waterline at 123 cm — slightly above eye level when seated on most sofas (eye height ~110 cm). Lower the stand to 60 cm if your sofa is deeper; raise to 80 cm for kitchen counter-style standing display. More on this in our HDB aquarium placement guide.

Width Compatibility

122 cm (4 ft) is the global standard filter and light length. Every major equipment maker — Eheim, Oase, Fluval, Chihiros, Week Aqua — builds 4 ft SKUs. This makes the 55 the easiest footprint to kit out affordably.

Cabinet and Sump Space

Inside a closed-door stand: usable space roughly 110 x 30 x 50 cm. Fits a canister filter (Eheim Classic 600 is 23 x 23 x 43 cm), CO2 cylinder, dechlorinator, test kits and spare media. Sumps are possible but unusual on 55 — typically reserved for 75 gal+.

Glass Thickness and Safety

Rimmed 55s use 6 mm float glass with plastic bracing. Rimless versions use 10-12 mm starphire or low-iron glass with silicone seams only. Rimless are heavier (glass density) and more expensive but visually cleaner. Budget rimless adds SGD $200-$400 over rimmed.

Comparison Dimensions

40 breeder: 91 x 46 x 41 cm (151 L). 50 gal: 91 x 46 x 48 cm (189 L). 55 gal: 122 x 33 x 53 cm (208 L). 75 gal: 122 x 46 x 53 cm (284 L). The 75 is effectively a 55 with proper depth — worth considering if you can afford SGD $200 more. See 55 vs 75 gallon comparison.

53 cm water column is moderate. Standard LEDs reach the substrate. Maintenance reach is comfortable — your arm can touch the bottom without shoulder submersion. Taller tanks (64 cm on 45 tall) cause back and wrist strain during cleaning.
