Best Fish for 55 Gallon Tank Guide: Community Stocking
This best fish for 55 gallon tank guide is built around the iconic 122 x 33 x 53 cm (~208 L) 4-foot classic. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, we’ve stocked hundreds of these tanks — the 4ft length is brilliant for schooling fish, but the 33 cm narrow depth means you skip certain territorial species that a 50 gallon handles easily. Below are the species that actually work.
The Length Advantage
122 cm is enough for a 25-30 fish tetra school to spread properly. It’s also enough for active swimmers like rainbowfish, congo tetras and angelfish pairs to establish territory without daily skirmishes.
Large Schooling Tetras
Congo tetras (10-12), rummynose tetras (25-30), cardinal tetras (25), lemon tetras (20). These all benefit from the 4ft runway. Rummynose especially — they school tighter the more length they have. SGD $2.50-$8 each depending on species.
Centrepiece Options
One angelfish pair, a trio of pearl gouramis, one keyhole cichlid pair, or a firemouth cichlid pair (mildly territorial, fine in 208 L with dither fish). Discus is possible but the 33 cm depth limits juvenile growth — stick with a 50 gallon or 75 gallon for discus seriously. See our angelfish pair 55 gallon notes.
Bottom Dwellers for the Length
The 33 cm depth is the constraint here. Sterbai corydoras (10-12) work. Kuhli loaches (10-15) thrive. Bristlenose pleco (1 adult) for algae. Skip common plecos — they outgrow a 4 ft tank. Skip synodontis species — they need more depth for territory.
Rainbowfish Feature Tank
8-10 boesemani rainbowfish, 8 turquoise rainbowfish, 10 congo tetras, 6 sterbai. The 4 ft length lets rainbowfish show full colour during morning feeding displays. Best colour under Chihiros WRGB II 120 at 70%. SGD $240 fish.
Livebearer Colony
The length suits platy, swordtail and mollies — livebearers constantly cruise. 10 platies, 6 swordtails, 6 corydoras panda, 3 Otocinclus. Add crushed coral to buffer GH up. SGD $120 fish.
Single Species Showpieces
1 juvenile oscar (grows to 30 cm, will need 75 gallon upgrade within 18 months). 1 juvenile severum. A trio of Bolivian rams. These benefit from the 4 ft length but are terminal — don’t mix aggressive cichlids with community fish.
Species to Skip on a 55
Adult oscars (need 75 gal+). Common plecos (45 cm). Bala sharks (schooling and huge). Silver dollars (need deeper tanks). Tinfoil barbs (50 cm). Green terror cichlids (too aggressive for the depth). Our fish that outgrow 55 gallon covers all the traps.
Community Combination Examples
Combo A: 25 rummynose + 10 sterbai + 1 angel pair + 15 amano shrimp. Combo B: 15 congo tetras + 10 kuhli + 3 pearl gouramis + 1 bristlenose. Combo C: 10 boesemani + 8 turquoise rainbow + 12 congo + 6 sterbai. More in our 55 gallon stocking plans.
Singapore Climate Suitability
28-31°C ambient favours South American and Southeast Asian species. African cichlids like yellow labs work too — they handle the warmth but need harder water (add crushed coral). See our mbuna in Singapore piece.
