This 55 gallon fish tank setup complete guide covers the most iconic hobbyist size in the world — the 48 x 13 x 21 in (122 x 33 x 53 cm, ~208 L) 4-foot classic. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, we see more 55 gallon builds come through than any other footprint. It’s cheap, widely stocked, and the format a whole generation of “oscar tank” childhood memories was built on. It also has real trade-offs you should understand before buying.

The Iconic 4-Foot Footprint

122 cm length is the sweet spot for visual impact in an HDB living room. Place it against a TV console wall and it becomes the room’s focal point. The 4 ft dimension also means stands, hoods, lights and filters all come pre-sized and cheap.

The Depth Trade-off

Here’s the catch: 33 cm front-to-back depth is tight. That’s 13 inches. Compared to a 50 gallon (46 cm deep), you lose real aquascape layering. Your layouts will feel like wall paintings, not dioramas. Our shallow depth aquascaping piece shows how to work around it.

Floor Load Reality

Filled 55 gallon weighs ~250 kg including substrate, rockwork, stand and water. On an HDB concrete slab against a load-bearing wall, this is fine. On older timber subfloors or mid-span in large BTO living rooms, check with your contractor. Our HDB floor load guide covers specifics.

Tank, Stand and Hood

Rimmed 55s with black plastic trim are SGD $150-$220 used on Carousell, SGD $280-$450 new at C328 Clementi. Rimless 4-foot starphire versions from Y618 Serangoon North or Nature Aquarium Gallery run SGD $550-$900. Stands: steel frame (SGD $180) or marine plywood cabinet (SGD $280-$450).

Filtration Sizing

Target 5-7x turnover, so 1100-1400 L/h. Eheim Classic 600 (SGD $280), Oase BioMaster 600 (SGD $520) or budget Sunsun HW-704B (SGD $150). Twin hang-on-back filters also work and simplify maintenance.

Lighting the Length

48 inches is a standard light length. Chihiros WRGB II 120 (SGD $380), Week Aqua P900 (SGD $280), or budget Sunsun 120 cm LED (SGD $80). For planted, aim for 50-70% intensity with CO2. Fish-only builds can run cheap LEDs at 30%.

Substrate and Hardscape

Three 9 L bags of ADA Amazonia Version 2 for planted, or 15 kg of inert gravel for fish-only. The shallow depth means hardscape composition should emphasise two planes — a left-side focal group and a right-side supporting group, with negative space centre. See our 4-foot tank scape layouts.

Cycling in Singapore

PUB tap water pH 7.2-7.6, GH 4-6. Dechlorinator (Prime or Seachem) always. Silent cycle 3-4 weeks with dry start, or fishless ammonia cycle 4-6 weeks. Temperature 28-31°C speeds bacterial colonisation.

Stocking the Iconic Format

Options: 25 cardinal tetras + 10 kuhli + 1 angelfish pair. Or classic: 1 oscar juvenile (grows out, needs upgrade at 20 cm). Or 30 rummynose + 12 sterbai + 3 pearl gouramis. The 122 cm length really shines for horizontal swimmers. Details in our best fish for 55 gallon tank guide.

Singapore ambient 28-31°C. Heaters rarely needed. Clip fans or inline aquarium coolers (SGD $280 for Hailea HC-150) for discus or aircon-off households.

Maintenance Schedule

Weekly 30-40% water changes. Magnetic scraper fortnightly. Canister media rinse monthly. Plant trim every 2-3 weeks. Budget 90-120 minutes weekly at maturity.
