55 Gallon Planted Aquarium Setup Guide
This 55 gallon planted aquarium setup guide walks you through building a lush 48x13x21 inch (122x33x53 cm, 208 L) aquascape in a Singapore HDB context. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, Singapore, we assemble 55 gallon planted tanks weekly for customers who want more scaping depth than a 4-foot standard but without 75 gallon floor-load headaches. The 21-inch height is the sweet spot for stem plant arrangements.
Why 55 Gallon Works for Planted Scapes
At 208 L, the 55 gallon offers twice the water volume of a standard 120 cm tank while keeping filled weight around 250 kg — manageable for most HDB living rooms on a rated stand. The 21 inch height lets you layer foreground, midground and background with realistic forced perspective. Narrow 33 cm depth, however, limits side-to-side island scapes.
Aquasoil Substrate Layering
Use 18 L of ADA Amazonia, Tropica Aquarium Soil or Iwagumi-branded aquasoil from Iwarna. Cap lava rock base layer (3 cm) with soil (5-7 cm sloping front to back). Total substrate weight reaches 22 kg. Rinse new soil ammonia via three 100% water changes over week one — PUB tap water at 28-30°C accelerates bacterial establishment.
Hardscape: Seiryu vs Frodo Stone
Seiryu stone from Polyart ($6-$9 per kg) gives sharp Iwagumi aesthetics but raises KH slightly — monitor pH. Frodo stone from Nature Aquarium Gallery Thomson Road ($7-$10 per kg) is inert and safer for shrimp. Budget 8-12 kg hardscape for a balanced 120 cm scape. Rock selection walkthrough covers sizing ratios.
Lighting: 70-90 PAR at Substrate
For medium-high light stems (Ludwigia, Rotala rotundifolia, Alternanthera reineckii), target 70-90 PAR at substrate. Chihiros WRGB II 120 or Twinstar 1200EA delivers this comfortably. Budget $380-$620 at C328 Clementi or Y618 Serangoon North. Run 7-8 hours photoperiod with 1 hour ramp up/down.
CO2 Injection System
Pressurised CO2 is non-negotiable for medium-high light planted setups. A 2 L refillable cylinder, solenoid regulator and inline diffuser run $180-$260. Aim for 30 ppm via drop checker showing lime green. Singapore ambient 28-30°C reduces CO2 solubility slightly, so compensate with higher bubble rate.
Filtration Sizing
Run external canister rated 1000-1200 L/h. Oase BioMaster 350 or Eheim 2217 work excellently. Pair with lily pipes for surface gentle turnover to maintain CO2. Canister filter comparison benchmarks flow rates after media load.
Plant Selection for 120 cm Width
Foreground: Monte Carlo or Eleocharis acicularis mini carpet. Midground: Cryptocoryne wendtii, Staurogyne repens. Background: Rotala H’ra, Ludwigia palustris super red, Pogostemon erectus. Aim for 60% plant mass on day one to outcompete algae. Green Chapter Jurong West sells tissue culture pots at $12-$18 each.
Fish and Shrimp Stocking
Community picks: 20 cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi), 12 Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata), 10 Otocinclus vittatus, 1 pair Apistogramma cacatuoides. Avoid substrate-digging species that uproot carpets. Planted tank fish guide lists 30 compatible species.
Water Parameters and PUB Tap
Target 6.2-6.8 pH (with CO2), GH 4-8, KH 2-4. Singapore PUB tap water runs pH 7.5-8.0 and KH 2-3, so CO2 alone drops pH appropriately. Dechlorinate with Seachem Prime. Weekly 30-40% water changes at 28°C match ambient — no heater required. During aircon-cooled rooms below 24°C, add a 100W heater.
Singapore Sourcing Summary

Green Chapter Jurong West has Frodo stone at $7/kg and cardinal tetras at $2.80 each. Iwarna imports premium ADA soil at $55/bag and ADA lily pipes at $120+. Nature Aquarium Gallery Thomson Road offers full planted setup packages $1,500-$2,400. Polyart supplies Seiryu stone at $8/kg and CO2 cylinders at $180. Carousell lists used canister filters at $80-$150, and Shopee carries Twinstar lights from $350. For a mid-range 55 gallon planted build, budget SGD $1,400-$1,900 complete.
Algae Prevention in Week One
Dose Seachem Excel daily for first 14 days, maintain 6 hour photoperiod initially, and perform 50% water changes every other day. Diatom bloom is normal — Otos and Amanos handle it naturally by week three.
