This 75 gallon planted aquarium setup guide walks Singapore aquascapers through substrate layering, CO2 injection, lighting, and plant selection tuned to our 28-30 degC ambient and PUB tap water. Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park has scaped dozens of 122 cm planted displays, and the 48 x 18 x 21 inch format is our favourite canvas for both iwagumi and nature-style layouts.

Why 75 Gallon Is the Sweet Spot

At 284 litres, a 75 gallon gives enough height (53 cm) for genuine background stem groups and enough depth (46 cm) for mountain or forest perspective. It fits standard 120 cm LED bars and is large enough to stabilise parameters but small enough to water-change via a single 20 L bucket route.

Substrate System

Start with a 1 cm bottom layer of Tropica Aquarium Soil Powder or ADA Power Sand for root nourishment, then 5-7 cm of ADA Amazonia Ver. 2, Tropica Aquarium Soil, or Dooa Tropical River Soil as the main capping layer. Expect to use 18-24 L of soil for a 122 cm tank. See our dimensions guide for exact footprint maths.

Hardscape Planning

A 48-inch canvas suits three visual anchors rather than one. Use Seiryu, Ryuoh, or Frodo stone for iwagumi, or Malaysian driftwood + spider wood for nature style. Budget 15-25 kg of rock or 8-12 kg of wood.

Composition Tips

Follow a 1:1.6 golden-ratio focal point and leave the front third as open foreground. Depth illusion comes from sloping substrate 3 cm at the front to 10 cm at the rear.

CO2 Injection

A 75 gallon planted tank needs 2-3 bubbles per second through an inline or in-tank diffuser. Use a 2 kg or 3 kg aluminium cylinder refilled at Polyart or welding supply shops for $15-$25 a refill. Pair with a dual-stage regulator ($180-$260) and solenoid timed to 1 hour before lights on.

Lighting

A 120 cm LED at 60-90 PAR mid-tank is the target. Chihiros WRGB II 120 ($280-$340), Week Aqua L900 ($420-$520), or Twinstar 900E ($650-$780) all deliver. Run 7-8 hours with a 1-hour ramp; longer photoperiods trigger algae in Singapore’s warm ambient.

Filtration and Flow

Aim for 4-5x turnover; that means 1,100-1,400 L/hr. Eheim 2217 ($280) or Oase Biomaster 350 ($480) are our default picks. See our filter sizing guide for complete options.

Temperature Management in Singapore

Ambient temps of 28-30 degC are too warm for many sensitive stems. An aircon-equipped room holding 24-26 degC, or a pair of clip-on fans lowering tank temp by 2-3 degC, is often mandatory. See the heater watts guide for when a heater is actually needed.

Plant Selection for SG Conditions

Heat-tolerant carpets: Monte Carlo, Eleocharis acicularis mini. Midground: Cryptocoryne wendtii, Staurogyne repens. Background stems: Rotala rotundifolia, Limnophila hippuridoides, Ludwigia palustris red. Skip HC Cuba and Utricularia graminifolia unless you run chilled water.

Dosing and Water Change Schedule

EI-lite dosing with Seachem Flourish or APT Complete at 5-7 ml daily, 50% water change weekly using aged PUB tap water plus Prime. RO-remineralised water is optional for rare stems and shrimp-breeder layouts.

Stand and Load Considerations

A filled planted 75 gal with hardscape pushes 360-380 kg. Over a 0.55 sqm footprint that is 650+ kg/sqm, exceeding HDB’s 150 kg/sqm. Site over a load-bearing wall as per our HDB load rating guide.
