Keeping Homalomena Lagenandra Silver Powder in SG tanks
This is a hardy rhizome aroid with a soft silvery-green leaf that brings a muted, natural texture to a planted layout. Like other rhizome plants in this family it is undemanding, which makes it a forgiving choice for Singapore hobbyists working with low-tech, no-CO2 tanks on an HDB shelf. It works as a midground feature where you want a different colour and form to the usual deep greens, pairing well with anubias and ferns.
The golden rule with rhizome plants is to never bury the rhizome itself, or it will rot. Instead, anchor it to wood or rock and let the roots grip on, leaving the rhizome exposed. Our tap water is soft and slightly acidic, which these plants tolerate well; just dechlorinate for the chloramine first. At 27-29C growth is slow and steady, so be patient and keep lighting moderate to avoid algae settling on the broad leaves.
For a tank built around plants like this, see our low-tech planted tank guide and our epiphyte aquascape guide for attaching to hardscape. A little dosing helps, so our beginner fertiliser guide is worth a read. Browse more in our live plants range.
