Keeping Oscars in Singapore: Big Personality, Big Tank
Oscars (Astronotus ocellatus) are intelligent, interactive cichlids that genuinely recognise their keepers and beg at the glass, which is exactly why they have such a devoted following. What buyers often underestimate is size: a single Oscar reaches well over a foot and needs a large, heavily filtered tank to thrive. They are messy eaters with a serious bioload, so plan filtration and water changes around a fish that will outgrow most starter tanks within a year.
Singapore’s warm 27-29C ambient suits Oscars perfectly, so most setups run heaterless. Use smooth hardscape and avoid sharp decor, as Oscars rearrange their tanks and can injure themselves. They are best kept singly or with carefully chosen robust tankmates, since they will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouth. For HDB and condo keepers, factor in the floor loading of a large, full tank before committing to the footprint one of these fish demands.
This fish sits in our others livestock range. Acclimate new Oscars carefully with our acclimation guide, and our Oscar care guide and tank mates guide cover housing and compatibility.
