Caring for Lamp Calvus (Altolamprologus calvus) in SG tanks
The Lamp Calvus is a slow-moving, predatory Tanganyikan cichlid prized for its tall, laterally compressed body and the way it hangs vertically near rockwork to ambush smaller prey. We find it rewards patient keepers who give it a stable, mature aquarium with plenty of stacked stone, shells and tight crevices it can wedge into when it feels exposed or wants to spawn.
Calvus comes from hard, alkaline Rift Lake water, which is the opposite of Singapore’s soft, slightly acidic tap supply, so we strongly recommend buffering up the GH and KH and keeping parameters rock-steady rather than chasing them. The good news is that our ambient 27-29C suits the species well, meaning most home setups need no heater at all. Feed meaty foods and avoid housing it with fish small enough to swallow.
